  ADHD Resource Center

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition which includes difficulties with attention, increased activity, and difficulties with impulsivity. Estimates show that between 3 and 7 percent of school-aged children and about 4 percent of adults have ADHD. It is usually first identified when children are school-aged, although it also can be diagnosed in people of all age groups. In an average classroom of 30 children, research suggests that at least one will have ADHD.

No single biological cause for ADHD has been found. But most research points to genes inherited from parents as the leading contributor to ADHD. ADHD often runs in families.

The good news is that there are safe and effective treatments for children and adolescents with ADHD. Treatment is most effective when it begins early and when intervention is individualized to the needs of the child.

Seizure Disorders

There are more than 20 seizure disorders, which are brought on by hyperactivity in the brain. Seizures may be as subtle as a stare or a sudden change in awareness, or as physical as a convulsion. These seizures may last from a few seconds to several minutes. When seizures take place, there can be disruptions of any of the other functions controlled by the brain, from thoughts and emotions to functioning of the heart and lungs. Some seizure disorders experienced by children are difficult to control while others are well-regulated by medication. Medications will not cure a seizure disorder, but may help to control it.

Under Pressure, Feds Move Forward With Community Living Plan

Medicaid officials have agreed to release long-awaited rules for a new program designed to expand community living, caving to pressure after disability advocates blocked all of the entrances to their building.

The move comes after members of the disability rights group ADAPT protested outside the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Washington headquarters on Wednesday, demanding that federal officials release regulations governing the new Community First Choice Option.
