The Year of the Lord's Favor
                                                                                                                        ~Gary Holloway

February 14-17, I along with board members Doug Foster and Robert Welsh and Abilene Christian University student Joel Brown attended the annual meeting of Christian Churches Together in the USA (led by board member Dick Hamm), held in Memphis, Tennessee.

The theme of the meeting was from Luke 4:18-19:
"The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."

With these words in our hearts, participants from over forty Christian churches and groups experienced the work of Martin and Luther King and the Civil Rights movement. We shared this experience through presentations by those who worked with Dr. King-Bernard LaFayett and Virgil Wood-and through visits to the National Civil Rights Museum, Slave Haven (a museum of the Ground Railroad), and the Mason Temple where King gave his final "Mountaintop" speech.

This emotional and spiritual look backward actually focused the group on the future. How can we as Christian Churches Together work toward racial and economic justice for all people?

That was the question we prayed over and discussed in small groups, around meals, and in plenary sessions.

In addition to that focus, the highlight of the meeting was worshipping together in various styles. As we worshipped and fellowshiped together, it was plain that the Spirit is moving among us to proclaim good news.

So my question to all the churches in our movement-Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Churches of Christ, and Christian Churches-is how shall we together work to proclaim good news-freedom, recovery, reconciliation, and justice-to all people, languages, nations, and tribes?

March 8, 2012 was International Women's Day, a moment in the year to envision what it means to be, "connecting girls, inspiring futures."  This day has been recognized since the early 1900's and moved from being a reminder about negatives to a celebration of positives regarding women, their possibilities, and contributions in global community.

This month is also proving to be a time of visioning and preparation, call and response, connecting and celebration.

Global Women Connecting will have a special program during the 18th Global Gathering that will speak to the special ways women are present to each other and their communities.  Ideas are beginning to buzz as our speakers prepare.  New country representatives are making themselves ready to help in the shaping of Global Women Connecting's future.   And women who claim and strive toward understanding are listening  and sharing in the unity of this special bond.

I know the special blessing that comes from having a friend in another part of the world. Won't you join me in sharing the special gift God has placed in our lives? This month is a perfect time to learn and share more of the mission and ministry of women in the Campbell-Stone family. Write a letter or email sharing your friendship. Post or tweet where you find women making a difference in your part of the world.  Text or phone a friend to get together and celebrate.

Together, let's discover God's latest plans for us!
