Korea Looks Toward 2016

                                                          ~Gary Holloway

From July 29 to August 4, I was blessed to be in Korea, hosted by Dr. Kang Pyung Lee, First Vice-President of World Convention.

Highlights of the week include:

  • The warm hospitality of the Korean Christians, who housed us in the most modern hotel in Seoul, fed us sumptuously, and patiently waited for us to learn to eat with chopsticks.
  • Hearing Gary Weedman, President of Johnson University, speak at the Convention of the Korean Christian Churches Association in Daejeon.
  • Learning of the work of C.Y. Kim in planting churches in China.
  • Touring Korean Christian University with its President Sung Taek Lim.
  • Hearing the exciting plans for our Global Gathering in 2016, including a prayer for peace with Korean Christians North and South at the Demilitarized Zone.
  • Worshipping with the Hwagok Church of Christ and the Yesusanrang Christian Church.
  • Hearing Randy Harris of Abilene Christian University speak at the Convention of the Christian Churches in Korea.
  • Experiencing the heart-felt worship at the Convention.
  • Speaking to over 300 young people present at the Convention.
  • Joining in the 6:30 A.M. prayer meeting of the Koreans (a feature in all their churches).
  • Seeing the leadership of Kang Pyung Lee among the churches as they prepared for and pledged funding toward the 2016 Global Gathering.

In short, the week was a great blessing. God is at work powerfully in Korea. The Christians there are spreading the good news of Jesus throughout their country and into all the world!

               Church Dedication in Brazil

Jeff Fife, Brazil River of Life Ministries

Celebrate with us the dedication of one more church for the honor and glory of our Lord Jesus Christ!

A few year ago the governor and the mayor officiated that the neighborhood of Bom Retiro in Sao Paulo as "Korean Town". In 2009 through the office of the World Convention in Nashville, TN, USA, we were contacted by Dr. Lee of South Korea to jointly open up a bilingual church in Bom Retiro. After much prayer and planning this dream, it is [came] true Sunday August 14. We legalize the coming of Pastor Choi and his family who came from Korea and are already working. We particularly appreciate the Park family who is in Brazil since the 80's, for being used by God to make this dream possible.

Adversity Fuels Determination...Kindness

Those of us born into times of relative peace, prosperity and freedom are often too removed from the struggle and growth of earlier, faithful generations.   A read through the Profile on Korea gives clear examples of the power adversity creates in the vision for a Christian kingdom, and generates hope in the face of changing global conditions. We are reminded that especially in difficult circumstances, God's love creates change, understanding and growth.

My research found this article in the KCGM Newsletter June 7, 2011 -

"ONE OF THE FIRST GROUPS OF KOREAN PEOPLE who started to raise funds to help the Japanese earthquake and tsunami victims were the women's groups who were fighting the Japanese government for an apology and compensation for the forced labor and service  ( sometimes called 'rape camp' ) to the Japanese soldiers when the Japanese military regime occupied our land.  These elderly ladies have been fighting for the last 60 years, but now as they witnessed the unspeakable tragedy of the enemy and a neighbor, they started to help. I guess that's a Christian spirit and love."

These women found a way through Christ to forgive, and move into a future of love.  Their example of kindness calls us into acts of faith and unity.

May you see God at work today!
