TWO WEEKS WITH THE CHURCH IN THE UNITED STATES
~Gary Holloway
In a two-week period in July, I attended three large meetings of our churches in the United States-the Lipscomb University Summer Celebration, the North American Christian Convention, and the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Although each meeting focused primarily on one tributary of our movement, what impressed me is how much they all had in common.
What I found at all three gatherings:
· Spirit-filled, heartfelt worship to God. At Lipscomb, this was led by World Convention board member Ken Young who will lead us in Goiania.
· Inspiring preaching that called us to love of God and love of neighbor, particularly to love those different from ourselves!
· Thought-provoking classes and Bible studies from teachers like Loren Stuckenbruck, Jerry Sumney, Fred Craddock, and Jerry Taylor (who will be a plenary speaker at Goiania).
· Wonderful reunions with friends, like World Convention board members Wye Huxford, Mark Taylor, Jackie Bunch, Doug Foster, David Vargas, Dick Hamm, and Reggie Hundley. I also was reunited with Phil McAfee, a member of the local planning committee in Brazil.
· I was part of panels on what our three groups have done together. Bill Baker, Carmelo Alvarez, Rick Cherok, and Jerry Sumney were fellow panelists. World Convention board member Robert Welsh moderated a panel. The response to the panel discussions was uniformly enthusiastically positive, both at the NACC and the General Assembly.
At none of the assemblies did we minimize our differences. But I wish you, like me, could have been at all three to see how much we do have in common. And the essential commonality is our experience of being beloved children of God-Father, Son, and Spirit.
God is at work!

The Women's Desk Global Women Connecting ~ Julia Keith
Do you know what I love about conferences / assemblies / conventions / gatherings? It's when we finally lay eyes on the people we have emailed or telephoned or texted throughout the year (or more!). It's in meeting the people we read about, whose ministries and lives we watch from afar. It's about meeting people with new insights and ideas. It's in renewing relationships with the people we've prayed for...who have been praying for us. It's the hugs, the smile, the laughter of a family reunion!
If you share these feelings of joy in your experiences of coming together, I think you will share my excitement with two new approaches to historical practices.
Disciples' Cookbook Project
The cookbook project's mission is designed
"to preserve your congregation's history by collecting past and present cookbooks". Just imagine browsing through the nutritional wisdom and life anecdotes of our ancestral mothers (and a few fathers) of the faith! The Disciples Historical Society will hold the collection - last count there were 190! And although this project has begun with the Disciples' stream, I happen to know for a fact that there are at least two Christian Church/Churches of Christ additions! (I'm imagining global contributions and perhaps a compilation of recipes and stories from around the world!) Go to your kitchen shelves and church libraries. When you find those well-loved cookbooks from those long-ago fundraisers, send them to:Disciples of Christ Historical Society Attn: KK Wiseman 1101 19th Avenue South Nashville, TN 37212 Potluck RevolutionHave you been "desperate to come back to life around the table?" Then the Potluck Revolution has something for you. It is about "turning back to our legacy of preparing and sharing food with one another. It is about remembering God's gifts of justice, reconciliation and hope - as they are simply received together around the supper table." It is acknowledging that we are a diverse group trying to find common ground. With an eye toward "the Table", it's a challenge to deepen our spiritual experience around our tables. Here's how... 1 - Pick a time and a place. Anywhere is good. 2 - Invite others. 3 - Make some food (enough for you and a little to share) 4 - Go. Meet. Share. Eat. 5 - Wash. Rinse. Repeat!! It's that simple. Cook. Serve. Eat. Live.
