Annual Report - A Look at 2010  ~Gary Holloway

In 2010, God continued to work powerfully through the ministry of World Convention.

Highlights of the work and program of the World Convention in 2010:

The board, consisting of 32 members from eleven countries met in April and made ambitious plans for the future, confirming Gary Holloway as the new Executive Director, and confirming Global Gatherings in Goiania, Brazil in 2012 and in Seoul, Korea in 2016. These will be the first Global Gatherings of World Convention in South America and in Asia.

World Convention organized a group from all three streams of the Stone-Campbell Movement in the United States to make presentations at national events on how we have worked together for unity.

Global Women Connecting, an organization associated with WCCC seeks to provide ways to allow visible unity in service involving Christian women throughout the world.

The greatest experience this year was the visit of B.J. Mpofu and Gary Holloway to Goiania, Brazil, hosted by board member Victor Hugo Queiroz and the local planning committee. These were our impressions:

  • Brazilians are the friendliest people. The local church leaders and people were particularly helpful to us, spending time and money to make our visit enjoyable.
  • Local and state government and civic leaders are active supporters of the Global Gathering.
  • Many Brazilians speak or at least understand some English. Learning a few words of Portuguese goes a long way toward communicating.
  • Goiania is modern, safe, and economically booming, with a young and vibrant population.
  • Local hotels are quite nice, moderately priced, and no more than a ten minute walk from the Convention Center.

To summarize, the Global Gathering in Brazil will be a watershed for the World Convention. You will find the worship exhilarating, the messages biblical, uplifting, and eloquent, and the fellowship greater than any you have experienced. Brazil will be wonderful!

We ask for your continued prayer and support for 2011. We particularly need funds to support those worldwide who want to attend the Global Gathering but do not have the funds. This year all contributions beyond our annual budget will go toward a fund for this purpose.

We also suggest a way to promote the cause of Christian unity. Your pledges of one minute and one dollar a day will make a difference in World Convention's ministry.

God is at work among us!

Thank You For Your Continued Support

The ministry of World Convention continues because of your gifts of prayer, time and financial support.  It is our prayer that by recognizing these gifts you encourage others.

One Minute

The first thing we are called to do for Christian unity is what Jesus himself did. We pray for it. We ask that God might work to make all who believe in Jesus one.

For this year, would you commit to pray one minute per day for Christian unity?

For several years, World Convention has promoted Eleven Eleven, that daily at 11:11 we pray for Christian unity. If that time does not work for you, would you set another time during the day to pray one full minute for the unity of the church? In that prayer each day, please ask God's blessing on the ministry of World Convention

One Dollar

If we pray for Christian unity, we must be willing to work for it and to support others who are engaged in that work. Many of you regularly support the work of World Convention. Others of you would like to but are experiencing financial difficulties.

For 2011, would you commit $1 a day to World Convention?  How much is $1 a day?

  • Less than a soft drink from a vending machine per day.
  • Less than buying two coffees per week.
  • Less than a meal out at a restaurant for two per month.

Little actions add up and mean a lot. A minute a day and a dollar a day can go far in showing our commitment to the unity of God's people. So please join us in making your pledge...

Lyndsay and Lorraine Jacobs Report

Thanks so much for concern.   We are fine - being 30 km from the city centre.  Big shake here though. No damage at our place.  We have power (didn't Sept) so can see/hear news.  Our daughter Phillippa & Russ in the city are fine but her business building (already a re-locate from the Sept quake) is seriously damaged.  She (& Russ, boys 7 & 9) are home and believe the house is OK.  Big mess inside to clean up.  Much street damage nearby.  The quake was not as big as the 'original' (Sep 4) but was more central and during lunch hour (last time Sat 4 am) so people everywhere.  Lots of damage and there will be a significant loss of life.  No serious injury or loss of life amongst our church folk that we know of but communication poor with city.  Emphasis on locating & freeing people at present.  We are just staying home - best thing to do right now.  Thanks again.  Lyndsay - and Lorraine

Carson Joins Board for Zambia

Disciples of Christ Historical Society president Glenn Thomas Carson has joined the Board of Directors of The Zambia Project. www.zambiaproject.org

With a focus on humanitarian assistance to the people of Zambia, the Project offers an inclusive set of programming, including medical care, agriculture, life skills, and education.

"We see a bright future for Zambia," says Project CEO Larry Mathis. "And we foresee a day when the Zambian people will be able to live independent of foreign assistance."

Home of Victoria Falls, Zambia is located in the southern sector of the African continent, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo as its northern neighbor. With a rich heritage of cultural and natural resources, the nation was named by the World Bank as one of the fastest economically reforming countries in 2010.

Officially a Christian nation, with 85% of its citizens identifying themselves as such, Zambia is also home to a wide variety of religious expression, including Islam, Judaism, and Baha'i.

Carson sees The Zambia Project as one link in a much larger chain. "When it comes to fulfilling mission," he says, "none of us can hope to get the job done alone. This is why our focus is always on unity, because we realize that only together can we answer the high calling of the Gospel."

Thank you, God for the friends you have placed in my life, for the emails they send and the experiences they share.  Amen.

They Teach It at Stanford

"I just finished taking an evening class at Stanford. The last lecture was on the mind-body connection - the relationship between stress and disease. The speaker (head  of psychiatry at Stanford) said, among other things, that one of the best things that a man could do for his health is to be married to a woman whereas for a  woman, one of the best things she could do for her health was to nurture her relationships with her girlfriends.

At first everyone laughed, but he was serious.

Women connect with each other differently and provide support systems that help each other to deal with stress and difficult life experiences. Physically this quality "girlfriend time" helps us to create more serotonin - a neurotransmitter that helps combat depression and can create a general feeling of well being.  Women share feelings whereas men often form relationships around activities.  They rarely sit down with a buddy and talk about how they feel about certain things or how their personal lives are going. Jobs? Yes. Sports? Yes. Cars? Yes. Fishing, hunting, golf? Yes.  But their feelings? Rarely.

Women do it all of the time. We share from our souls with our sisters/mothers, and evidently that is very good for our health.  He said that spending time with a friend is just as important to our general health as jogging or working out at a gym.

There's a tendency to think that when we are "exercising" we are doing something good for our bodies, but when we are hanging out with friends, we are wasting our time and should be more productively engaged-not true. In fact, he said that failure to create and maintain quality personal relationships with other humans is as dangerous to our physical health as smoking!

So every time you hang out to schmooze with a gal pal, just pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself for doing something good for your health! We are indeed very, very lucky.  Soooo, let's toast to our friendship with our girlfriends. Evidently it's very good for our health."

Mission Opportunity in Brazil - 2012

~ Phil McAfee

As missionaries for the Christian Churches-Churches of Christ I would like to extend an opportunity for those coming to the World Convention (Global Gathering) in 2012.  Both before and after the convention we are able to receive a group of 5-20 to work with the TALITA CUMI DAY CARE CENTER. (Talita Cumi are the Aramaic words Jesus spoke to the child that was dead and mean "rise up little child". This has become the theme for the Day Care - to help these little children and their families rise out of needs.
This group would be involved in a VBS and could also get involved in reform or building while with us.  To help with the housing and meals we would ask that each person give a donation of 100 US dollars. From the Day Care to the World Convention we will have further information closer to the date. Anyone interested should get in touch with us at
[email protected] or you can write to us at the following address: Philip McAfee; C.P. 2001; Sobradinho, D.F. Brazil, S.A. 73.062-001
