Praying Dangerously
World Convention is excited to announce Gary Holloway's recent book, Praying Dangerously.  This book leads you through the prayers of both the Old and New Testaments, exploring the rich heritage of those who turned to God in joy and sorrow, triumph and defeat, faithfulness and sin. It reminds us that we are connected through Christ not only to God's people throughout the world, but also to those who followed him in the past. If you'd like a copy, ask at your local bookstore or buy online at www.leafwoodpublishers.com

THE KEY TO UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE

I had wonderful experiences July 6-9 in Indianapolis. World Convention Board member Robert Welsh graciously introduced me to many of his colleagues in the General Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). All were enthusiastic and helpful regarding the ministry of World Convention. I also spent time with our treasurer, Rick Reisinger, discussing budget matters and future plans. I had a helpful and encouraging breakfast meeting with board member Dick Hamm.
At the North American Christian Convention, board members Bob Wetzel, Wye Huxford, Reggie Hundley, and Mark Taylor helped me promote World Convention. I was blessed to hear several uplifting presentations, but the most remarkable was from Mark Weedman, a professor at Crossroads College in Minnesota, on biblical interpretation in the Stone-Campbell Movement. He asked the question, "What if we read the Bible through the lens of Christian unity." Looking at Paul's writings, in particular Philippians 2, Mark eloquently showed that the point of the Christ hymn in that chapter is to urge Christians to have the humble mind of Christ. But the purpose of that humility was that they would make Paul "truly happy by agreeing with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose" (Philippians 2:2).
Christian unity thus is not merely a nice but optional thing for Christians. Instead (quoting Mark):
When we are united with each other, we manifest the mind of Christ.
When we are disunited with each other, we deny the mind of Christ.
Therefore, the visible unity of all believers is central to the gospel.
To follow Jesus is to work for unity.
He went on to say that many in the Stone-Campbell movement have looked for a blueprint in the Bible. While that is problematic and divisive, if there is a blueprint in the Bible, then Christian unity is that blueprint.
I couldn't say it better than Mark. That's what the ministry of World Convention is all about. Working for unity, the heart of the gospel, is the work we have pledged our lives to do.

                  news from Global Women Connecting

I was recently reflecting (in my blog) on Gary Holloway's discussion of confession, and discovered a personal need to adjust my focus, to center my thoughts and my work on the balancing love of the Trinity - God, Christ and Holy Spirit.

As I allow God's word to guide, and the Holy Spirit to inspire, I am reminded that each of you have been planted in a place where you are guided in bringing Christ's life and wisdom to your community.  We regularly receive many, many letters, emails and newsletters that tell of the work you are involved in, about the struggles - and the joys of your daily encounters.  Here are some examples:

Church World Service - inventory of clean-up buckets and school kits is extremely low. The need is great - we are in the midst of tropical storm and hurricane season. Thank you for giving from the heart!

World Council of Churches - The need for a "theology of healing" was the central theme of a recent international encounter between Orthodox women and Christians of both sexes from other traditions. www.oikoumene.org/news/news-management/eng/a/article/1634/orthodox-women-seek-theo.html

HAITI - "We never saw that many suffering, pain, misery in our entire life.  People turn to God for answer." - Arnold

ZIMBABWE- "I am looking forward for a friend who can consider me in (their) life in prayers." - Andrew

BRAZIL - we were blessed to be able to dedicate a rental location for the Jundiai church on Saturday March 27.

Most importantly, we hear your continuing hope as you see God actively providing for your ministry.  We want to know more and share more of the ways God leads you, especially the ways you are encouraged through World Convention and Global Women Connecting.   So I close with words from Stan in New Zealand who wrote a little over a year ago, "I am helped to keep on keeping on the the daily fight and struggle in our Lord's great army.  How wonderful it is to be a part of the Lord's purpose.  Thank and praise his holy name!"

 Lester Palmer
Dedicated Member Retires From Board

It is with our most sincere appreciation that World Convention accepts Lester Palmer's retirement from our active board.  Lester has served this ministry since 1984, beginning with our 12th convention in Auckland, New Zealand held in November, 1988.

Lester D. Palmer is President Emeritus of the Pension Fund of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the organization he served for more than thirty years. Since his retirement in 1996, he has served ten interim ministries, and is now writing the history of the Pension Fund.  He is a native of Augusta, Georgia, received his undergraduate work at Johnson Bible College, his seminary education at Lexington Theological Seminary and did doctoral studies in Church Ministries and Administration at Boston University School of Theology.  He received Doctor of Divinity degrees from Bethany College and Christian Theological Seminary and the Doctor of Humane Letters from Eureka College.  Mr. Palmer received the Chartered Life Underwriter and the Chartered Financial Consultant designations from the American College of Life Underwriters. Prior to his ministry at the Pension Fund, he was Associate Professor of Church Administration and Director of Field Education at Lexington Theological Seminary. He had served earlier as the Associate General Minister of the Christian Church in Kentucky.  He is married to Janelle Griffin and they have four daughters: Gwen Chandler (Augusta, GA), Sandra Wood (Columbia, SC), Kathy Hagemier (Danville, IN) and Leslie Kopecky (Colorado Springs, CO).  They are members of the Northwood Christian Church in Indianapolis.

Although he is leaving the board, Lester is not leaving World Convention.  In his own words, "Rest assured that I will continue to be supportive of the World Convention in every way possible."

We will miss Lester's regular insight and wit, but know that God's plans for retirement will bring new light to Lester's calling.
