The Seven "C's" of the World Convention

 What is the World Convention?

Editor's note:   Our last ChristiaNet detailed World Convention's ministry as depicted by "Seven C's."  In this issue, Gary Holloway reflects on the first - our call to be a  ministry of Christ

LAST WORDS

When I was twelve years old, my mother fought a valiant battle against cancer. For the last three weeks of her life, she was sent home to be with us. I clearly remember the rhythm of my days. Going to school. Coming home. Talking briefly to mom. Going outside to play. One day as I left her to go outside, she said, "Watch out for Mark" (my younger brother).
Those words stuck with me. For during that night, mom died. They were her last words to me. And although she probably meant something like, "keep an eye on your five-year-old brother as he plays," I gave those words deeper meaning. She could not be around to care for my baby brother. I'd have to shoulder part of that load for her.
Last words mean a great deal. On the night he was to die, Jesus gave some last words. He could have talked of the business of church or some doctrinal issue. Instead he said this: "I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one-as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me" (John 17:20-23).

Last words from Jesus: "Be one."

Do we take those words seriously? Every Christian I know thinks unity is a good idea.  But is it a priority?  Do we do what Jesus did?  Do we pray for it fervently? And if we pray for it, then we must be willing to let God accomplish it through us. These are last words. That means Christian unity is at the center of God's will for us. It means it trumps church as usual. It means unity is a central doctrine of our faith.
Most of all, it means we must do more than think unity a good idea. We must talk about it constantly. We must go beyond talk to visible action.
The ministry of the World Convention is the work of Christ. It is Christ in us, answering his prayer, his last words, that all who believe may be one, so that the world may know the love of God.

Board Meets

Dreams...Plans... Reality

The following is the press release concerning our recent board meeting:

Board members from Brazil, Kenya, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, England, and the United States met April 15-17 in Nashville to plan future ministries and activities for the World Convention. "We heard amazing stories of how God has connected congregations in Australia, Brazil, and South Korea to share the gospel together," executive director Gary Holloway reported.

He added that the board made plans for a Global Gathering in Goiania, Brazil, August 1-5 2012, and for another Gathering in 2016 in Seoul, Korea.
Through its Web site (www.worldconvention.org), the World Convention seeks to link all ministries of Restoration churches worldwide. Soon resources will appear there for World Convention Sunday, August 1, 2010. "It will be a day for congregations around the globe to celebrate our unity and our service together," Holloway said. He added that many congregations that day will receive a second offering to support the work of World Convention. For more information contact Holloway at [email protected].

But a press release does not do justice to the depth of the experience. In those few days together we experienced the power of God who makes us one in Christ through the Spirit. In those meetings we saw our brothers and sisters face-to-face. We shared in their wisdom and their joy. We made friends from all parts of the globe. We were welcomed into the World Convention family through prayers and laying on of hands.

You can have a similar experience in your own community. Just reach out. Call. Have lunch with those who worship in another place. We invite you to the same joyful experience on a larger scale at our Global Gathering in Goiania, Brazil, August 1-5, 2012. God is at work among us!
