Gary Holloway BEGINNINGS-OLD AND NEW

The work of the World Convention is based on two firm convictions. God is at work among us. God is at work within us.
As I begin the work of Executive Director of the World Convention, it is certainly a new beginning for me and (in a sense) a new beginning for the World Convention. Years ago a wise old minister gave me this advice, "For your first year in a new ministry, become a lover and a historian." By that he meant one should learn to love the people in that church just as they are, and one should learn the stories that shaped the faith and mission of that church.
I think that is wise advice. So as I begin my work at World Convention, I am reminded that God has been at work in this organization for over eighty years. That's why my primary work this first year is to listen. What I'd like to hear are your stories of how God has worked in the World Convention. What were those times, those peak moments when you experienced the joy of unity in Christ? Where did you see God working to draw us into his community?
Let me tell my story. Before the Global Gathering in Nashville in 2008, I was blessed to be part of a Stone-Campbell tour. On the Sunday before the opening of the Nashville Gathering, I found myself in the pulpit at Cane Ridge, reading from Scripture and from the writings of Barton W. Stone. I looked out and saw brothers and sisters from all parts of the United States, Australia, and South Korea. Different countries. Different languages. Different churches. Later as I looked into the faces of those gathered that day around the Lord's table, I felt the presence of Barton Stone, of countless others who have communed at Cane Ridge through the years, and of God's people gathered from every tribe and language throughout the world. Most of all, we felt the presence of Christ through his Holy Spirit. In that moment, the differences that sometime divide us was swallowed up in the experience of the Holy.
In the words of Thomas Merton, "The deepest level of communication is not communication but communion. It is wordless. It is beyond words and beyond speech, and it is beyond concept. Not that we discover a new unity. We discover an older unity. We are already one, but we imagine that we are not. And what we have to recover is our original unity. What we have to be is what we are."
That's my World Convention story. What's yours? Please email ([email protected]) or write us (1279 Brentwood Highlands Dr., Nashville, TN  37211 USA) with your stories of World Convention. I look forward to hearing those stories and sharing them with others throughout the year.

Kenya Church Legally Recognized

We rejoice that the Church of Christ in Kenya has received legal recognition for the Kenyan government that will enable them to minister more effectively!

Nyabuto Marube writes:
"Officials from the Registrar of Societies at the Attorney General's office this week handed over the registration certificate to the three office bearers. Joseph Sigilai is the National Chairman, Nyabuto Marube is the General Secretary and Benson Odeny is the National Treasurer. All these three are ministers of the gospel. Joseph Sigilai ministers with the Magadi Road Church of Christ in Kajiado district near Nairobi; Nyabuto Marube is from Kayole Church of Christ, 15 miles east of the city centre and Benson Odeny is from the Dandora Church of Christ, also in Nairobi."

"We plan to soon start the process of developing a strategic plan for the years ahead and hope to partner with the global church family in carrying out the holistic mission of the church in order to reach out to many souls and win them for the Master.  Seize the opportunity and be part of the strategic plan development."

"This message goes out to many of you who are mission minded: please come over and work with us.  Invite us to your missions and development forums/workshops. Recommend us to Christian organizations that would get into a synergistic partnership with us in order to achieve our objectives."

 A Time of Transition...

At the end of this month, Clint Holloway draws his years of service to World Convention to a close. The World Convention is deeply grateful to Clint for all the ways he has served. The global church is particularly in his debt for the wonderful job he did in preparing the National Profiles of our churches (see http://www.worldconvention.org/nationalprofiles.php) and for his work on the history of World Convention. Our prayers go with Clint as he pursues other areas of service.
