| Earthquake in Haiti
On January 13, 2010 at 4:22 PM Eastern Standard time a terrible earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale, hit Haiti. The epicenter was located at Carrefour, a suburb just out of the city of Port-au-Prince. In seconds the damage could be estimated to more than ten billion dollars. A preliminary count summarily estimates 200,000 deaths. The number continues to grow. On January 22nd a second earthquake, this one measuring 6.1 on the scale, send shock waves throughout the island nation already reeling from the earlier disaster in one of the poorest places on Earth.
Christian Churches and Churches of Christ, the Churches of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) all have a presence in Haiti. In addition many other mission organizations within our family are responding with emergency disaster aid, in addition to many global and interdenominational relief agencies and ministries, and international governments. We encourage all within the Stone-Campbell Movement family to avail themselves of some opportunity to help in whatever way they can.
