HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Greetings!
All of us at Pest Control Center wish you a Joyous HolidaySeason and a Happy, Prosperous New Year! |
Burrowing vertebrates can cause extensive damage to landscapes in California and Oregon. Their burrows and tunnels not only damage the investment you've put into your landscape, but can, at times present a hazard to humans and animals. They are a real factor where liability issues on your properties are concerned.
 | Adult Vole |
California Voles, sometimes called Meadow Mice cause extensive damage to fruits, vegetables and flowering plants. They also feed on tree bark, ornamental plantings, turf grasses and Dichondra. They damage plants from a few inches above ground to a few inches below ground. Their feeding can be fatal to your valuable landscape plantings and cause unsightly damage to your lawns. The most effective control is achieved by the use of baits applied by professionals.

appearance fool you. It is a serious landscape pest. Strictly a ground dweller, it makes its home in burrows below ground. The species' tunneling activity can cause significant damage to the roots of plants (including large trees) and foundations of structures. It is mainly herbivorous and will feed on turf, new seedlings, fruits, vegetables, leaves and seeds. Ground Squirrel feeding can cause extensive damage to valuable landscapes. They will also gnaw on irrigation equipment, with obvious, expensive consequences. Occasionally Ground Squirrels will feed on the eggs of ground dwelling birds. Their open burrows are often of sufficient size that a human or large animal stepping into one could end up with a sprained ankle, broken leg or some other injury. Again, baits, applied by professional technicians, are the best means of control.
 | Adult Mole |
This is a face only a mother could love! Moles can make you crazy! They have driven more than one gardener to total distraction. They build extensive tunnel systems to live in, raise their young and in their search for worms, grubs and insects upon which to feed. This activity causes considerable damage to lawns and valuable plantings. The shallow feeding tunnels they build are not always visible. Stepping on one and having it collapse could cause a person to lose balance and fall. Moles can be difficult to control. Trapping them requires specific techniques and can be hit-or-miss. However, newer baits available to professionals, which are placed in the animals' burrows, offer improved potential for saving your landscape from these critters.

amusing little creatures, but there's nothing funny about the millions of dollars in damage they do annually on Golf courses, lawns, sports fields of all kinds, not to mention residential and commercial landscapes. Gopher mounds are crescent or horseshoe shaped. The opening is off center and usually plugged with a soil plug. The mounds can range in size from a few inches across to a foot and a half, or more. A large infestation can make a landscape look like a mine field. Gophers generally feed on roots and fleshy portions of plants which they encounter during tunneling. Occasionally they will feed up to a body length from a burrow opening. They will occasionally chew on sprinkler lines, diverting water down their burrows and causing erosion. Several methods are used to control gophers. They range from traps to baits to gas pellets and beleive it or not, by professionals using a specially manufactured device to flood their burrows with a mixture of propane and oxygen and detonate the mixture, an exciting process, to put it mildly.

Delusional Parisitosis
Periodically someone will come in to our office or call us on the phone complaining of tiny pests biting them, often at night. Sometimes they will have physical symptoms such as rashes or sores and scabs. They say they've seen doctors and tried everything; Home remedies, over the counter pesticides, professional pest control services, but nothing seems to help. Some bring in plastic bags, or other containers with "specimens" which are actually only lint, dust, bits of debris and sometimes scabs or other unsavory detritus, hoping that we can identify them as pests. They are in genuine anguish and we want to help them so we go to their houses, we inspect and find nothing. Unfortunately, everything they believe they are experiencing appears, in the final analysis, to be imaginary and we are powerless to alleviate their suffering. Without positive identification of a pest organism we can't prescribe or perform a treatment.
The suffering of these individuals is real but not pest related. So what could be causing their misery? Sometimes there are physical reasons for their symptoms as with a condition described by the Mayo Clinic called Morgellons Disease. This is a mysterious controversial condition that is still under investigation and not all researchers agree that it's real or what its causes may be. According to the Mayo Clinic website, Morgellons symptoms include:
- Crawling sensations on and under the skin, often compared to insects moving, stinging or biting.
- Fibers, threads or black stringy material in and on the skin
- Severe Fatigue
- Inability to concentrate and short-term memory loss
- Behavioral changes
- Joint Pain
- Vision Changes
More often however, the problem appears to be psychological in nature. There are different terms used by the medical profession when referring to this condition:
- Illusory Parasitosis
- Delusory Parasistosis
- Delusional Parasitosis
- Delusions of Parasitosis.
The Minnesota Department of Public Health says on their website that, "Delusional Parasitosis is a psychiatric condition, suffered mainly by older women although younger people, including men, can be affected. DP is a disorder characterized by people having the mistaken belief that they are parasitized by bugs, worms or other creatures." According to University of California, "This belief is based on the sensations felt in the skin that are very real to the sufferer." They state that causes for sufferer's symptoms can include stress, reaction to use or abuse of prescription or illicit drugs, a variety of environmental factors or Delusory Parasitosis. This condition can be induced by various kinds of stress, including work-related pressures, relationship issues, or financial stress. Individuals suffering from delusions of parasites can sometimes scratch themselves so badly as to damage their skin, causing rashes and infections resulting in sores and scabbing. These can serve to reinforce the patient's belief that biting arthropods or other organisms are involved. According to the University of California, persons with DP sometimes employ desperate measures to alleviate their symptoms. They will apply unconventional and toxic substances, including pesticides, to their bodies, jeopardizing their health (and possibly their lives) in the process. It's been observed that persons afflicted by this disorder will sometimes mutilate themselves in an effort to get rid of the perceived infestation.
This condition can become serious and should not be ignored. The consensus of my sources seems to be that, If you suspect that you are suffering from DP or you suspect that someone you know is suffering from it and an actual pest or parasite infestation has been ruled out, medical attention should be sought as soon as possible and tests should be run to rule out any physiological causes for the symptoms. If no physical conditions are diagnosed your physician may refer you to a counselor or mental health professional. Patience is indicated as your health care providers sort through the causes and prescribe the best treatment for your individual case. |
PEST CONTROL IN WINTER
Is it really that important?
It's winter. A time when nature seems to take a rest. But things are not always as they seem. In the world of pest control there is still a lot of work to do, especially when you consider the mild nature of California's winters. Pests such as Black Widows and other spiders, ants, cockroaches, termites, bed bugs, fleas, rats, mice and the like, may slow down a bit, but they don't go away. In fact, in the warm, comfortable environs of our homes, they continue feeding, growing and multiplying. Even outdoors some insect pests, such as Argentine Ants and some rodents, like gophers and rats, continue their activities. While it may be tempting to cut your pest control service during this season, as a cost-saving measure, winter is no time to take a break from pest control. If we do, we give them a head start for the next year. Conversely, winter is an excellent time to gain the upper hand over many of the pests that plague us. Regular treatment of building foundations remains important during this season, to keep warmth-seeking, crawling pests from gaining access. If you've ever had a mid-winter ant invasion in your home, you know what we're talking about. Argentine and other ants can and do invade buildings in winter and when they do they tend to take up residence inside wall voids, making control slower and more difficult. It's much better to keep them out in the first place. Termites also remain active during this time, continuing to move about, feeding on any wood they find, including our homes. Efforts to keep them in check should continue the year around. Each winter some customers express concern regarding treatments during wet weather. During this time of the year most treatments are performed in the areas around the base of the home. These areas tend to be under the eaves, don't usually receive large amounts of moisture and are usually ok for treatment during light rain. However, should heavier rain become a concern, the treatment can be rescheduled for a different day. Once pest control materials have been applied and have had a chance to dry in place, subsequent precipitation will not usually affect the treatment.
