Boston Meter Cards: a great idea, but...
 |
I couldn't figure out how to use this pre-paid meter card. Find out why.
|
Boston recently introduced pre-paid cards to use at parking meters. It's a great idea, but I couldn't figure out how to use mine.
Read my blog post about the problem: you have to hold the card in the slot for 10 to 15 seconds. That's a problem because it's not how other cards work and there are no instructions. Good thing I had a pocket full of quarters so I could park.
The post includes videos of the meters in operation. See if you understand why the display changes 3 times for checking in and 5 times for checking out. And if you can figure out why it says "1111" at one point, let me know.
I hope they can fix the problems because it could be very convenient. I talked with someone and offered some ideas; see what you think.
Recent work
I recently helped two clients develop user experience design processes. We used design workshops to generate ideas, user-centered design techniques to improve an information architecture & create prototypes, and usability studies to review our ideas with customers. One client has a product release coming up and everyone's excited about it.
