Wanted! A Few Good Volunteers!

Hamline University is hosting 16 "Fellows" from the Middle East for six weeks starting at the end of April. These young professional leaders (four Israeli, four Palestinian, four Jordanian and four Lebanese) are participating in the Hamline "Education to Employment" program, sponsored by the US State Department.  They will be in the Twin Cities to study American private, non-profit and public sector organizations as they develop their own projects to promote the transition from "Education to Employment" in their home communities.

HSB is playing an important role in this project and we want to include you! We are looking for 16 graduate students from any of our graduate programs(eight men and eight women) who would like to be an informal host/contact for one of the Middle East Fellows. Your role will be simple: take your Middle East guest out to dinner* and some activity at some point during their stay (between the end of April and early June) to provide them a more informal and personal view of life in the Twin Cities.

If you are interested, please contact Professor Ken Fox for more details at: kenfox@hamline.edu

*a small fund has been set aside to subsidize your dinner

HSB at ASPA

Several HSB faculty in Publicaspa Administration attended the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA) national conference in Baltimore April 11-15 on Public Administration Without Borders. Those who attended include adjunct professors Ellen Dosdall-- who is the current president of MN Chapter of ASPA, Wally Swan, and Thomas Walkington--who is an outgoing member of the ASPA national council. Professor David Schultz participated in a panel on how to get published in scholarly journals and Department Chair Kristen Norman-Major moderated a panel on Cultural Competency in Action. The national ASPA annual conference provides an opportunity for academics and practitioners to learn about the latest developments in the study and practice of public administration.

Economic Consequences of the Affordable Care Act

The Health Law Institute at Hamline University School of Law is hosting an event on April 5 with Drexel University law professor Barry R. Furrow. Professor Furrow is the lead author of Health Law - Cases, Materials and Problems, which is the leading casebook in the health law field.

In The Economic Consequences of the Affordable Care Act: Should We Worry? Professor Furrow will examine the justifications for the Affordable Care Act and some of its possible effects in improving access, promoting patient safety, and regulating insurance markets. The long-term costs, benefits, and economic consequences of some of these changes will be considered, including deficit reduction or increase.

The revised due date for preliminary findings to MAAA is September 23 with the final report due to MAAA by October 31, 2011.

The evaluation will focus on the following components:

1. Impacts of the various Title III funded service delivery models on intended client outcomes as specified by MAAA policy;
