MNM Students Take the Plunge for Special Olympics

MNM

Master in Nonprofit Management students (MNMs) completed the Polar Bear Plunge on March 12 at Round Lake in Eden Prairie.  The team raised nearly $1000 for the Special Olympics while braving tempatures near 20 degrees with wind chills far colder.  Not ideal weather for a dip in a lake, but the sacrifice in comfort was worth the effort.  Congratulations to this group of hardy Plungers and young nonprofit leaders.  More information about the Polar Bear Plunge can be found at http://www.plungemn.org/

Scholarships and Regalia

The deadline for the Gladys Sinclair Brooks Endowed Scholarship is approaching.  April 8 is the application due date for this scholarship that is awarded to female MPA or DPA students.

The application deadline for the Steve and Julie Novak Endowed Scholarship is April 18.  All MPA and DPA students are eligible for this scholarship.  Check the application forms for details

Planning to graduate? Regalia orders are due April 25.  Orders can be placed online at www.hamline.edu/commencement or through the bookstore.

Wanted! A Few Good Volunteers!

Hamline University is hosting 16 "Fellows" from the Middle East for six weeks starting at the end of April. These young professional leaders (four Israeli, four Palestinian, four Jordanian and four Lebanese) are participating in the Hamline "Education to Employment" program, sponsored by the US State Department.  They will be in the Twin Cities to study American private, non-profit and public sector organizations as they develop their own projects to promote the transition from "Education to Employment" in their home communities.

HSB is playing an important role in this project and we want to include you! We are looking for 16 graduate students from any of our graduate programs(eight men and eight women) who would like to be an informal host/contact for one of the Middle East Fellows. Your role will be simple: take your Middle East guest out to dinner* and some activity at some point during their stay (between the end of April and early June) to provide them a more informal and personal view of life in the Twin Cities.

If you are interested, please contact Professor Ken Fox for more details at: kenfox@hamline.edu

*a small fund has been set aside to subsidize your dinner

Lean Six Sigma

Following up on your continuing interest in Lean Six Sigma training/certification classes, Rick Hardcopf, MBA Adjunct Professor, will be offering another series of Green Belt and Black Belt classes through Acceleren Consulting at our Hamline University -Minneapolis location, beginning in May, 2011.  This opportunity is open to current students and alumni.  Check the program flyer, contact Rick, or go to Acceleren's website if you have questions.

Ken Fox in Paris

Ken Fox, Conflict Studies Director and

Ken Fox

HSB Associate Professor, recently returned from the Catholic Institute of Paris after completing an on-line international franchise negotiation exercise between graduate students at Hamline and Catholic Insitute and teaching two intensive graduate courses for French students.  The franchise negotiation gives American and French students experience conducting a truly global collaborative business negotiation while using the increasingly common negotiation medium of e-mail. Ken worked with the American teams and then met with the French teams to de-brief the exercise.  In addition, he taught a capstone module for 16 French students completing their Masters program in mediation and negotiation.  Finally, he conducted a two-day intensive course for 30 French lawyers and other professionals, introducing and comparing American with French models of mediation.
