HSB Connects with Mexico

School of Business Interim Dean Nancy Hellerud and associate professors Ken Fox and Jim Hagen all presented to the faculty and students of the School of Political Science and Public Administration at Universidad Autónoma de Nueva León (UANL), in Monterrey, Mexico, November 5. Dean Hellerud presented on "Writing Expectations and Assessment" to a group of bilingual faculty of the UANL. Professors Hagen and Fox each presented to over 1,000 undergraduate students participating in an International Congress on International Relations as well as a smaller group of graduate students. Hagen Presented on "Social Media: A Midterm Check-up." Fox presented on "The Importance of Negotiation to International Business." Hamline University and the Universidad Autónoma de Neuva León (UANL) have an agreement to explore collaborative projects, including joint research, conferences and symposiums, and faculty and/or student exchanges.Jim Hagen

Jenny Keil Presents on Women in the Recession

 

Jenny Keil led a November 18 "FYSEM JennyThrowdown" event with a discussion topic of "Women in the Recession."  The series is for first year Hamline undergraduate students and focuses on important issues in a liberal arts education.  Keil, the author of several publications on the topic, continues her research and writing on how women's lives are impacted by the economy. Jack Reardon, Economist, Discusses Physics

Jack Reardon was invited toJack Reardon participate in the Third Annual Seminar on Heterodox Microeconomics held at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (the National Autonomous University of Mexico) October 14-16. The purpose of the seminar was to reconceptualize the content and teaching of microeconomics. Reardon's paper was entitled "What are the Questions We Should be Asking in Microeconomics: Can We Learn from Quantum Physics?"

Happy Thanksgiving

The School of Business office and most Hamline University offices and buildings will be closed on Thursday, November 25 and Friday, November 26 to celebrate Thanksgiving.  We wish you a happy and safe holiday weekend!

Jim Scheibel Writes for MinnPost

HSB Executive in Residence JimJim Scheibel Scheibel worked together with Christy Hovanetz from the Foundation for Excellence in Education to pen an article for MinnPost.com 

about improving Minnesota's education system. The article calls for the legislature to work together to achieve the common goal of educating the future of Minnesota.  Jim will be teaching Volunteer Management to the N5 cohort starting in January and will teach Professional Ethics in February. 

Hamline Writing Center Expands into Minneapolis. 

Did you know that the Writing Center is in a fixture at the Minneapolis Center?  Every Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. students can get help with their work at the Minneapolis Center.  Check out the memo from the Writing Center which includes information about scheduling an appointment.

Courses Fill in 3 Days

Registration for winter and spring term courses opened on Monday, November 15 and HSB graduate students didn't waste any time selecting their courses for the upcoming terms.  Spring MBA elective courses in Finance are full and MBA elective courses in Conflict Management are very popular.  There are just a few spots remaining in several Master in Nonprofit Management and Master in Public Administration courses.  If you haven't registered yet, please do so.  It will ensure you get the course you need and will help the School of Business secure appropriate classrooms and take care of other logistics.

Deadline for Applying to Holt Fellowship
The Holt Fellowship provides funding for students and faculty interested in international learning opportunities.  The deadline for winter, spring, summer travel is November 30.

Deadline to Apply for Modena or Dubai Trips
The deadline to apply for MBA international experiences to Dubai and Italy is January 31, 2011.
