Kristen Norman-Major Active at NASPAA Conference
Kris Norman-Major
Kristen Norman-Major, Chair of the Department of Public Administration in the School of Business participated in three panels at the annual meeting of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) which was held in Las Vegas, Sept. 30-October 2. She served as convener and presenter on the panel "Small programs, limited resources, big ideas: How smaller, mid-career and state and local focused programs are making it in the recession." She also presented her work on "Social Equity Across the Public Administration Curriculum" for the panel on "Teaching Social Equity within the MPA/MPP curriculum" and served as convener for the panel, "Educating for Cultural Competency" which included presentations by authors of chapters from the book she is co-editing with Susan Gooden of Virginia Commonwealth University, Cultural Competency for Public Administrators , forthcoming from M.E. Sharpe. 
Fahima Aziz Stays Focused on Learning

Economics Professor Fahima Aziz's paper "Metacognitive Strategies to Enhance Learning in Economics and for Life" was accepted for presentation at the Active Learning Strategies in Economics session at the 70th International Economics Conference in Charleston, South Carolina, October 10-13, 2010.

Jack Reardon and Jenny Keil Wow Italian Doctoral Students

HSB Professors Jenny Keil and Jack Jenny KeilReardon received rave reviews from doctoral students at the University of Modena-Reggio Emilia for their series of four seminars on labor economics and women and the economy presented there from September 27-30.  This is the second year that HSB professors have been invited to teach at the University in Modena.  Jenny and Jack are writing several articles on practical steps for cross-disciplanary teaching.

Want to Rub Elbows with Gubernatorial Candidates?
 

HSB is looking for 10 public administration student volunteers to assist with the registration desk at an October 25th social with the gubernatorial candidates. The social, hosted by Allied Executives, will include a brief presentation by the gubernatorial candidates, a Q & A session and a networking session. In return for staffing the registration desk, our 10 students will be able to attend the event for free. The event will take place on October 25, 2010 from 4:30-8:00. p.m. at the Mendakota Country Club. Volunteers would need to be at the Mendakota Country Club by 3:45. Jan Kuboschek '08 reports from a southern region of Germany where he is a Business Intelligence consultant for a 300 employee firm working with SAP products

Ana Maria Rojas '09 notes that she is living in Miami, Florida right now and doing an internship with the Colombian Government Trade Bureau.  The agency is called Proexport.  She was able to land the internship by using job search strategies learned in consultation with Rich Manke. 

Kathy Kardell, an alum of the Hamline Public Administration's Master's program, was recently named to the 2010 Top Women in Finance list, as chosen by Minneapolis-based Finance and Commerce, Inc.
 
Opportunity to Present at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research

The 25th National Conference of Undergraduate Research (NCUR) will be hosted by Ithaca College between March 31 & April 2, 2011.  Hamline's Collaborative Research Program will provide conference travel funds for undergraduates selected to present results of their academic work.  All interested students must submit their abstracts to a Hamline selection committee; the deadline for consideration is October 28, 2010.  For more information and submission instructions, please consult the NCUR 2011 website.  Email Alina Oxendine with questions.
