Fall 2010 Course Registration
The School of Business is hosting some great courses this fall that will not be available every term. If you need a course for the fall, please consider:
GPA 8498 - PR in the Public Sector - PR in the Public Sector is designed to acquaint students with the dynamics of effective communication in the public sector and as a valuable skill for career development. Through theory and practice, students will learn how to work with media, manage issues and crisis management, strategic communications planning and best practices for communicating to internal and external constituencies within the public sector environment. Instructor Mark Skiffman has great experience in the sector and is a positive resource. GPA 8260 - Alternative Service Delivery - State and local governments are facing their worst fiscal crises in years. As a result, public officials in Minnesota and across the United States are seeking either more cost effective or alternative ways to deliver public services, including the employment of what President Bush calls "faith-based initiatives." This course examines the theoretical underpinnings, debates, and track record of the various alternatives to delivery public services. Topics include: privatization, vouchers, contracting out, public/private and public/nonprofit partnerships, and the use of market incentives and competition to improve service delivery. We shall also examine several policy areas where alternative means to deliver services have been tried or advocated including criminal justice, education, health care, welfare, energy, and transportation. Taught by David Schultz, this class will have great debates and conversations MBA 8098 - Intellectual Property Transactions - All enterprises operate as both creators and consumers of materials protected by intellectual property law. Websites, marketing brochures and advertisements are protected by copyright; company names, brands and logos are covered by trademark; software, hardware and processes utilize patents; trade practices, innovation, client information and know how are governed by trade secrets; and the use of names and likenesses are regulated by state publicity rights laws. The course will provide an introduction to copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret law, and publicity rights, with an emphasis on how these fields affect business transactions. The course materials are inherently comparative in nature, allowing you to see how very different legal doctrine can be used separately or in combination to maximize business opportunities and manage business risk. Jon Garon, former Dean of the Hamline Law School and the Graduate School of Management, will be the instructor of this course. |
