Still Need a Summer Course? Consider a course on Leadership, Lobbying, or Social Demographics Graduate students are invited to examine their "life's work" this summer in Values, Vocation and Leadership - a graduate elective being offered with Julie Neraas.
If being a leader meant delivering good news it would be easy. But in these tumultuous times, when change is constant, and organizations, institutions and paradigms we have trusted for decades are collapsing around us, it is challenging to be a leader. This class will study that challenge and discuss ways to overcome the obstacles of leadership.
Lobbying for Nonprofits will provide the historical and theoretical context for nonprofit involvement in advocacy and lobbying. Students will address organizational infrastructure needs in building capacity for public policy work; examine legal guidelines for nonprofit lobbying and gain practical experience in working with the legislative process at the state or local level. Many nonprofits need an advocate to work with state and local government and this class will prepare students to work on behalf of nonprofits.
Interested in the connection between changing demographics and policymaking? Then Social Demographics may be the course for you. This course will look at some of the details impacting our society and specifically how immigration, aging, and policy converge in our society and ultimately in our policymaking. |

Dr. Nikolay Megits Presents on US-Ukraine Investment and Reforms
On March 21-23 Dr. Nikolay Megits attended the 12th International Global Business Development Institute Conference in Las Vegas, NV, where he presented a paper on the "Influence of U.S. Foreign Direct Investment on Economic Reforms in Ukraine." The title of the lecture is derived from a paper that has been accepted for publication in the peer reviewed International Journal of Global Business and Economics, for which he was the primary author with Dr. Robert Kramarczuk. The conference brought together attendees from across the academic landscape of business and economic studies throughout the world. The presented paper engendered a robust discussion about approaches employed by U.S. businesses for market development in Ukraine that had the greatest potential for return on investment, while promoting the continued growth and advance of the Ukrainian economy and long-term infrastructure. When based on solid demand and not short term speculation, particularly in the construction sector that was described in the paper, the two form a symbiotic relationship with the transformative power to recreate the investment climate into a sustainable and reliable one. This dramatic metamorphosis is necessary for Ukraine's aspirations of future membership in the European Union and the rise of living standards in the years to come. Further information about the conference can be found at www.gbdi-conference.org |
Jim Bonilla, Associate Professor of Conflict Studies, presented at the Eleventh National Conference on White Privilege on Friday and Saturday, April 9th and 10th. His presentation, "White Privilege and The Environment" addressed some of the most common myths about people of color in environmental and outdoor organizations. He also shared strategies for debunking those myths as well as making green organizations more racially diverse. |
