Spring Registration Opens Monday, November 16
Registration for winter and spring courses opens on November 16 for graduate and doctoral students. Highlights of our winter and spring semesters include:
- MBA International Experience in Italy
MBA students can study International Human Resource Management in Modena, Italy. Read about this exciting opportunity to earn MBA elective credits abroad and find the application form here.
- MPA, MNM Elective Topics
Jim Bonilla will teach Managerial Leadership and Cultural Competency, David Schultz will teach Sustainability, and Jim Scheibel will teach Civic Engagement. All of these "Topics" courses allow students the opportunity to further engage in a timely and relevant topic. These courses are numbered GPA 8498. Register on Piperline.
- MBA Electives in International Management, Finance, Conflict Management, and Human Resource Management
In the fall, MBA electives filled quickly. Be sure to register early to get the courses you desire or to complete your concentration. Do you have questions about MBA electives or concentrations? Attend a Concentration Meeting on Monday, November 16 at 6pm at the Minneapolis Center.
- Public Negotiation Skill Building in January
Earn 4 credits in January with Public Negotiation Skill Building taught by Bill Joynes. This class will meet six times in January including a few Fridays and Saturdays. What better way to spend a chilly January weekend than hammering out 4 credits with Bill Joynes? Get course details from Piperline.
- Economics Pre-Requisite
Do you need to earn an economics pre-requisite before taking Module 2 or Public Fiscal Management? You can complete that course at Hamline in January 2010. |

Jane Calabria McPeak Goes to Mexico
 HSB professor Jane Calabria McPeak was the guest this week of the Universidad Autonoma di Nuevo Leon in Monterrey, Mexico where she was invited to speak at the Symposium on International Civil Society. Professor McPeak's presentation was entitled "Saint Paul, Minnesota's District Planning Councils: 35 Years of Civic Engagement". While in Monterrey, Professor McPeak explored opportunities for collaboration between HSB and the Universidad. Watch for more news on this. |
Ken Fox Presents on "Conflict Coaching"  Ken Fox, Conflict Studies Director and HSB Associate Professor, was a session panelist at the 95th Annual National Communication Association meeting in Chicago. The panel session, "Conflict Coaching: A Communication Process for Changing Campus Conflict Systems" focused on the emerging process of "conflict coaching" that supports parties in their own constructive conflict work. Fox's presentation focused on incorporating conflict coaching into law and business courses and drew on his experience teaching conflict coaching as part of an ADR course at Deusto University in Spain.

ADVANCE Job Search Seminar Luncheon
Sixty HSB seniors enrolled in the ADVANCE Job Search Seminar will attend a luncheon seminar on Networking: Beyond the Basics Tuesday, November 17th from 11:20 to 12:40 in the Kay Frederick Ballroom. Speakers who rely on their networking and relationship building skills every day will share their insights. Guest Speakers include:

MPA Instructors in China
Two School of Business faculty, Tom Walkington and Wallace Swan, presented at the 2009 International Conference on Public Administration. The conference was held at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, in Chengdu China (UESTC). Tom Walkington co-moderated the panel "The Profession, Governance and Reform Issues". Walkington was also inducted into the adjunct faculty of University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. Walkington also presented a major paper on the issue of "Sustainable Development" to the assembled faculty and student audience. Wallace Swan presented on Saturday, October 24, 2009. The panel drew 80 audience members from among the 150 scholars present at the conference. Swan's paper was titled "New Developments in the Delivery of Internet-Based Public Administration Programs and Courses." Swan also co-moderated a panel entitled "Performance Issues and Management." |
MPA Alumni Event
HSB students are invited to join MPA Alumni to discuss the 25th Anniversary of the Latimer Commission. The Latimer Commission examined the Minnesota tax system and made recommendations on their research. What were those recommendations and what do they mean today?

ACUI is a nonprofit educational organization that brings together college union and student activities professionals from hundreds of schools in seven countries. Student membership in the organization is free and registration for conferences and events is greatly reduced for students. Ad Manager, Hamline Oracle
The Oracle is seeking an Ad Manager for '09-'10. The Ad Manager is responsible for selling ads (both print and online), generating in-house ad material and marketing the paper in general. Some ads are received via a contracted aggregator, but legwork is required to solicit additional ads. The job is perfect for business students looking to get some real-world experience in both marketing and sales. The position is also paid via a commission from ads sold and has the potential to be very lucrative. Ideal candidates are driven, organized, prompt and personable.
