Dean Julian Schuster Presents at DRIVE Event
Last night, HSB co-sponsored (with WCCO) the Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce's DRIVE-Emerging Leaders event. DRIVE-Emerging Leaders is a young professionals networking group which sponsors social events and monthly roundtables. Last night's event was held at the W Hotel in downtown Minneapolis and Dean Julian Schuster was the featured speaker. His talk focused on characteristics needed for leadership in the current economic environment. Also attending were Associate Dean Nancy Hellerud (who gave the Hamline introduction), Program Administrator Jamie McClary, and Assistant Program Director Wendy Delesha. MPA Alumni Event
HSB students are invited to join MPA Alumni to discuss the 25th Anniversary of the Latimer Commission. The Latimer Commission examined the Minnesota tax system and made recommendations on their research. What were those recommendations and what do they mean today?

MBA Concentration Meeting
MBA students will have the opportunity to meet with faculty to discuss the MBA concentrations and electives. Get all your questions answered on Monday, November 16th at 6pm at the Minneapolis Center.
With registration opening the same day, this timely meeting will allow students to ensure they are taking the right electives. Information will be available on international experiences at Hamline as well. Click here for more information about the MBA Concentrations. |
HSB Visiting Faculty Positions
The Hamline University School of Business invites applications for two visiting faculty positions for the spring 2010 and fall 2010 terms with a possibility of renewal. There is also a possibility of course assignments in the summer 2010 term. Read more about the openings here.

Basic Economics Course Offered
Basic Economics will be offered in January for graduate students who need to complete the economics pre-requisite. The course will run Monday, January 4, 11, 25 and Feb 1 from 5:30 to 9:30 in Klas Center 208. Students can register on or after November 16 on Piperline. |
Jack Reardon Shares his Expertise in Italy  Jack Reardon, professor in the School of Business, presented three lectures to doctoral students at the University of Modena, Italy. The lectures were entitled: "What are the Questions We Should Ask in Labor Economics," "The Historical Roots of the Financial Crisis and its Impact on Global Labor Markets," and "Theories of Unemployment from a Pluralist Persepctive." In addition, Reardon presented a faculty seminar discussing his research paper, "Towards a Reformation of the Theory of Safe Working Conditions -- A Preliminary Model." | |
Jenny Keil Will Speak at WomenVenture Conference
HSB Professor Jenny Keil will speak on November 13th at The Minneapolis Convention Center for the WomenVenture Conference: the largest professional development conference for women in the Midwest. Professor Keil's presentation, Earn More, Move Up, will discuss strategies for women to increase their pay and position in professional organizations. This presentation is based on Jenny's 2006 publication, Earn More, Move Up: A New Look at the Gender Pay Differential and her continued research on the topic.

Winter/Spring Registration Opens on November 16!
J-Term and Spring registration opens on November 16. At that point, students will be able to go to Piperline and register on-line. Most classes are already on the Piperline schedule so students can search for courses.
International Seminars The spring schedule will include MBA international experiences. Those programs are waiting for final academic approval. Watch this space for more information about those offerings.
MPA/MNM Electives  Jim Bonilla will teach a newly designed course. The course, Managerial Leadership and Cultural Competence, will fulfill elective requirements for MNM and MPA students. For more information about the course contact Jim Bonilla.
Other possible elective courses include David Schultz teaching a course on Sustainability and Jim Scheibel teaching about Civic Engagement. |
Public Service Mentor Program is Up and Running
The Public Service Mentor Program in the School of Business matches MNM and MPA students with experienced leaders in their field for an academic year of mentoring and networking. The 2009-2010 program kicked off on November 4 with mentors and mentees meeting and discussing their goals for the program. Special thanks to Susie Brown and Jim Scheibel who are coordinating the program and all the mentors who are lending their time and talent to this program.

Larry Bakken in Viking Magazine
Hamline Law Professor and MBA instructor Larry Bakken was featured in Viking Magazine, a magazine for members of the Sons of Norway. The article highlighted the trip that Larry leads each summer to expose U.S. law students to the Norwegian law system. The article will be posted on the Viking Magazine website in the coming weeks. | |
