Announcing the Graduate Student Conference Fund

The Office of Graduate Student Life is pleased to announce the creation of the Graduate Student Conference Fund to support Hamline students as they pursue academic, professional, and artistic endeavors outside of the classroom.

The Conference Fund is designed to provide one-time funding to assist individual graduate students in attending appropriate academic and professional conferences, workshops, or meetings.  Grants will be awarded up to $150 and are meant to reduce the student's expenses, not to provide full financial support for the activity.  Grant monies may be used to reimburse registration fees, travel, lodging and food expenses.

Ken Fox Negotiates in Istanbul

Ken Fox, HSB Associate ReardonProfessor and Conflict Studies Director, just returned from a week of teaching and conference meetings in Istanbul. On Wednesday, October 14, he co-taught with a Dutch colleague a one-day executive negotiation course to Turkish businesspeople, lawyers and students at Istanbul Bilgi University. Ken and his colleague were asked to design this course as a follow up to principles developed at an international conference on negotiation pedagogy in which they participated in Rome in May, 2008, and based upon the publication that came out of the Rome conference, "Rethinking Negotiation Teaching: Innovations for Context and Culture."
On October 15-17, he and four other Hamline dispute resolution faculty participated in a follow-up to the 2008 Rome conference. Also held at Bilgi University, the Istanbul conference brought together 50 invited negotiation scholars and teachers from around the world to further advance negotiation pedagogy beyond what was introduced in Rome. Co-organized by our school of law's Dispute Resolution Institute, this conference is part of a three year international project to develop a new framework for second generation global negotiation scholarship and teaching. A second book will be produced based on insights from the Istanbul conference. In turn, this new scholarship will lay the groundwork for the third and final year of the project on global negotiation pedagogy, which will be anchored in Beijing, China.
