Ciao amici,
Tuscany is hot! We know there are parts of the US and the world that are sweltering now and Tuscany is no different. We are in the height of vacation season around here, people have gone to the mountains or the sea and the pace of life has slowed. The gardens are still producing and we're enjoying the summer abundance.
This newsletter features eggplants. Click on the link to get the recipe and read the rest of the story. Gina shares recipes each week on her blog.
Enjoy the rest of the summer!

Eggplants are Abundant now
Even though eggplants can be found all year long, they're actually a summer vegetable and August is when they're the most abundant. I remember when the only eggplant you could find was dark purple, oblong and pear-shaped. Then suddenly a wid e variety of eggplants started appearing in the stores and range from small, white eggs, to mottled green and white balls, to long, thin fingers. Whether pale or dark purple, round and fat or long and skinny, the diversity of shape, size and color is truly astounding.

August Palio Update
It was an exciting race this past week! The Selva, Gina's contrada, didn't win - but the festivities, the dinners, the singing and trial races leading up to the big race on August 16th were all consuming and as always, thrilling!
Click here to see to the Palio race from August 16. The Montone contrada (the Ram) won for the first time in 22 years! |
