"New Farmers" the Topic of
Exhibit and Film Showing at the
Chatham Public Library

New farms are sprouting up all over Columbia County; meet the new face of agriculture through two upcoming events at the Chatham Public Library.

The New Farmer Narrative Project

The library is pleased to host the first installation of the New Farmer Narrative Project exhibit, Journeys into Farming, Saturday May 19th to Saturday, June 2nd.

The exhibit features 20 new farmers who have started or taken over farms in Columbia County in the last ten years. It is based on in-depth interviews and farm tours conducted by the Hawthorne Valley Farmscape Ecology Program in 2012.

The exhibit highlights the stories and experiences of new farmers in their own words, pictures of their farms, and an exploration of the current context of new farms in Columbia County.

The exhibit will have an opening reception May 18th from 4-7pm at the Chatham Real Food Co-op before arriving at the Chatham Public Library to start a four month tour around the County.

The Farmscape Ecology Program is a research and outreach organization with a mission of helping people connect to the agricultural, ecological and cultural landscape of Columbia County.  For more information about the New Farmer Narrative Project you can visit: www.hawthornevalleyfarm.org/fep/newfarmer.

The Greenhorns

The Greenhorns

The exhibit will conclude June 2nd at 6:30 pm with the film showing of The Greenhorns, a beautiful documentary featuring farmers from around the country, an original soundtrack and commentary by Eric Schlosser (author of Fast Food Nation) and Michael Pollen (author of The Omnivore's Dilemma).

The film was directed by local filmmaker, farmer, and activist Severine von Tscharner Fleming, who writes, "It will make you want to pick up a tool and run outside, wherever you are." The film is part of a larger national advocacy project, based in Hudson, NY, to recruit, support, and promote young farmers in America.

A new book by Tscharner Fleming and Paula Manalo entitled Greenhorns: 50 Dispatches from New Farming Movement is due out shortly.  For more information on The Greenhorns, you can visit www.thegreenhorns.net.

The Chatham Public Library to
Loan NOOK Simple Touch eReaders

NOOK Simple TouchThe library will begin a new pilot program this month - the two week loan of four new Barnes & Noble NOOK Simple Touch eReaders for Chatham residents over 18 with a valid library card in good standing.

The library's goal in providing this service is to offer patrons an eReader experience so that they may make an informed decision about buying one, should the patron decide this new technology delivers reading in a way that fits with their lifestyle.

NOOK ebooks

Options for selection of reading material on the library's new eReaders are available. The four NOOK's will come preloaded with new fiction to suite a variety of reading tastes. This option offers patrons the easiest alternative.

NOOK borrowers can also take advantage of the library's ebook lending program, by downloading ebooks from the library's website, onto a computer and then onto the loaned NOOK via a USB cord. Library staff is on hand to guide patrons through this process but to use this alternative it is necessary to have a home computer.

In order to allow the greatest number of Chatham Public Library patrons to try out the devices, borrowers will be limited to one checkout of the NOOK eReader until demand is met.To reserve an eReader call the library at: 392-3666 ext. 3.

THE LOST LADYBUG PROJECT

9 Spotted Ladybug
Lost Ladybugs
Children's Room
Wednesday,
May 23 and 30, June 6 and 13,
from 2:30pm to 4pm

Among the several dozen species of ladybugs found in New York state, the nine-spotted ladybug (coccinella novemnotata) was designated the official state insect symbol of New York in 1989.

However, over the past twenty years the nine- spotted ladybug and several other native ladybug species that were once very common have become extremely rare. During this period several species of ladybugs from other places have greatly increased both their numbers and range. Ladybugs are essential predators in farms and forests and keep the natural world from being overrun with pests (like aphids and mealybugs). To help the nine-spotted ladybug and others, scientists need to have detailed information on which species are still out there. This is where you can help!

Join the library and the Cornell Cooperative Extension in search of Lost Ladybugs.  Learn about the different types of ladybugs and their life cycle.  Help us locate and record information on the nine-spotted ladybug.
For children in grades 2-4.  To register for the event please email or call the library at 392-3666 ext. 3.
