New Book Group to Start at Library
Responding to interest in a library based book group, The Friends Of The Chatham Public Library are starting a book discussion group that plans to meet quarterly, with the first meeting scheduled for Wednesday, January 27th, from 6:30-8:00 pm at the Library. January's book choice was made by Maggie Hand-Miller of the Friends' Board. Maggie will also facilitate the first book discussion.

Strength in What RemainsThe Book Selection

Eight books into her search for  "the perfect novel" for the book group, Maggie found Tracy Kidder's latest work, Strength in What Remains. Novel?  Well no, but nonetheless a beautifully written, powerful story that happens to be true, Maggie says.  What could be better?

The book opens as Deo, a young African man, returns to his homeland of Burundi, after years of study in the US. The story that unfolds during the journey through his homeland and his past is both heart-wrenching and superbly told. "A brilliant testament to the power of second chances."

Pullitzer Prize winner Tracey Kidder has been described as a master of the non-fiction narrative.  Many of you have probably read some of his work including, Mountains Beyond Mountains. William Finnegan, author of Cold New World writes: "The reporting is impeccable, but it is Kidder's great feat of sympathetic imagination that dazzles.  Walk a mile in Deo's shoes; you will be larger and darker for it."

Details

Copies of the book can be borrowed through the library system. Contact the library at 518-392-3666 to reserve a copy. The book is also available for purchase in hardcover.

Please join us for what promises to be the beginning of a warm and lively sharing of ideas. Come armed with your own recommendations for future book group choices as well.  Please feel free to contact Maggie Hand-Miller at mingus@taconic.net about the discussion or any related subject.  We look forward to seeing you then!

HOME ACCESS Newspaper and Magazine Article Databases

The Library will offer free training this month on its full-text newspaper and magazine article databases.  These resources can be used at the library or from a home (or work) computer.  All that is needed is a library card.

These resources have information you cannot acccess through a normal Internet search, in fact, they are part of the "invisible web," available only to patrons of libraries where access has been purchased for them.

Sessions are scheduled for: Thursday, January 21, from 11-12am and Monday, January 25 from 5:30-6:30pm.  This is a great resource for students, teachers, parents, and anyone interested in research. Additional sessions will be scheduled in following months on other useful online resources purchased by the library.  Please call the library at 518-392-3666 to register or email us at: chathampubliclibrary@chatham.k12.ny.us
