Presiding Bishop visits BWS
BWS Logo
Katharine Jefferts Schori, the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, visited the Bishop Walker School as part of her diocesan tour April 22-25. She attended chapel with the students and read to them "A Book About God". Afterward, she toured our new campus at the Church of the Holy Communion. We were honored to have her experience this vital diocesan ministry and spend time with our students and faculty.
Celebrate the Opening of Our New Campus!
NewCampusExterior
On Sunday, June 6, join the Rt. Rev. John Bryson Chane and friends of the Bishop Walker School as we celebrate the opening of our new campus. The dedication service starts at 4 pm, with a celebration immediately following. Our new school is at the Church of the Holy Communion, 3640 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, SE. To rsvp, contact [email protected] or 202.537.6544. Please also let us know if you are interested in shuttle service from the Episcopal Church House to the school.
Visit by the Kwasa Center
The Kwasa Centre is a school in Daggafontein, South Africa, where more than 100 children as young as two years old receive education and care. These children live in extreme poverty in informal settlements. A group from the Centre, including the school's director, Rev. Sharron Dinnie, and Sibulele, an 8-year-old boy, spent time with our students the morning of April 20. They sang songs in Swahili and shared photos of their school and homeland, and Sibulele showed the boys how to blow the vuvuzela, the popular horn played at soccer games.

The visit came about thanks to St. John's, Lafayette Square, which partners with South Africa's Diocese of Highveldt, where the Kwasa Centre is located. BWS students will continue to keep in contact with Sibulele and his friends at the Center.

Loving Lacrosse!
lacrosseclinic
St. Albans' Head Lacrosse Coach Malcolm Lester and the STA Lacrosse team invited our students to participate in a three-hour lacrosse clinic at St. Albans on Saturday, April 17. The St. Albans boys and coaches generously and patiently shared philosophy, strategy, and skills with our students, all of whom were learning about lacrosse for the first time. Our young men fell in love with the sport and were thrilled to receive their very own lacrosse sticks, thanks to the generosity of Board Members John and Sara Thorne and Reid Figel.

With a few months remaining in the school year, please consider supporting the students of the Bishop Walker School by June 30. Your gift of any amount helps provide a solid foundation that will open doors to a brighter future. Click here to learn about the impact of your support.

Faculty Workshops
We encourage our faculty to stay abreast of the latest trends, techniques, and issues in education, and are pleased to report that each of them is currently enrolled in a class or workshop. They are taking courses in literacy through PBS Online, and attending workshops through DC's Office of the State Superintendent of Education. The more our teachers enhance their professional development, the better equipped they are to educate our students.
Partnership with St. John's Episcopal School
Our Kindergarten students formed new friendships with the seventh graders at St. John's Episcopal School in Olney, MD. The St. John's boys read some of their favorite books to our boys last month, and they visited again on April 28th to hear our students read to them. We hope to continue this partnership on a monthly basis.
Gifts for Good Fundraiser
StPatsfundraiser

Harry Reid, a fourth grader at St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School, encouraged his classmates to support the Bishop Walker School for their "Gifts for Good" fundraising project.  In addition to cash gifts, his classmates and fifth-grade teacher Jared Passmore purchased toys for our students.  The funds raised by the St. Patrick's community and the value of the toys were nearly $1,000.  In the photo above, Harry and Mr. Passmore presents a check to Principal Angela Garcia and Canon Preston Hannibal. We greatly appreciate St. Patrick's generosity!
