If you look closely you can see the end...or maybe not...

The K-Cup Invasion

The latest question of the day is<>

Well when is The Alpaca Bean gonna make K-Cups???

I reckon I could be fairly gross and say, "I really do not know any ladies that big!"...but I am not so I will not say such a thing!

The real answer:  The Alpaca Bean Coffee company probably will not move in that direction any time soon because of some simple factors...

First, the containers for the K-cup cannot be recycled, thus causing a tremendous environmental hazard and also filling up landfills if they become very successful. Having worked my previous professional career dealing with such problems, I do not wish to make the problems worse on my watch. To give you a sense of what I speak of...have you ever ridden down a stretch of highway and seen signs in the yards of regular folks that say, "SAY NO TO A REGIONAL LANDFILL !!!" If you have then you are beginning to get the picture...you see we are running out of land that is suitable to bury our trash...and unless you want the next one next door...well we need to be aware of this problem.

Next, it is more expensive...more expensive for the coffee roaster, and more expensive for the consumer. Now if you are a mega-company then you can mass produce these little gems and sell them to folks at a rate that will make you an even bigger mega-company...but if you are a small time mom and pop operation, well, it is out of the question.  If you are the consumer and you do not give a flip about that, you buy one of these nifty k-cups and pop it into the maker and "brew" up a single cup of coffee at twice the price.

The quality of taste is not where it needs to be, at least not yet...it is, by all accounts, a weaker brew that does not really meet the standards of a good drip cup.  But again, if all you want is a cup of joe quickly, then the k-cup may be your "cup of tea" indeed.

Finally, and as you probably can tell by all my previous articles, the k-cup is not about community and comradery...it is about single...single cup, single enjoyment, single everything...and hey, if you like a solitary existence...then the k-cup might be for you! :o)

By now you are probably saying that I have stretched this about as far as I can...but my point simply stated is...the K-Cup is fine for certain folk and the brewed pot is fine for others.  It just is a fact that you cannot serve a community very well one shot at a time...but to each his own...maybe some day The Alpaca Bean Coffee Company will be so big and so expansive that it will also promote the K-Cup...but I must say it will be The Alpaca Bean Coffee Company of another generation...and it will not be led by someone that had to fight the battles of waste disposal, litter, and pollution.  Maybe when the k-cup is recyclable and its byproducts are useful to man and womankind...well maybe then this older generation will become k-cup fans...you never know...

Pros and Cons of the K-Cup

The pros

It is easy to make. All you have to do is add some water to the reservoir if needed - because the machine can hold more then just one cup -, insert a K-cup (that has the coffee inside) in a slot, put a cup on the plate of the machine and push a button.

It is a fast brewing
. After the above steps, the coffee brews right in the cup, in under a minute. No more waiting. In a hurry, just pop a lid on the cup and hop in the car.

It only makes one cup
. If that's all you need to drink, then that's all it makes. No more left over coffee that gets wasted. If you need another cup, then you have to start it all over.

... and the cons

It is not a very strong coffee. That is, to be nice, a diluted cup. It is like a short Joe, instead of a long Joe.

It is expensive. The cost of an average cup of coffee brewed in a Keurig with a K-cup is at least 50% more expensive then a regular cup. They do not usually go on sale and the only discount offered is when you enroll in a club through an online retailer.

It cannot make drip coffee. For a traditional coffee you will have to go somewhere else or buy another machine, that brews a filtered drip coffee.

'Til next time...and yes...I am biased...can you tell?? :o)

On A Personal Note:

...........Promise me that you will not make it too weak..............

That is the plea that I make at each and every show to many many new customers.  You see The Alpaca Bean Coffee, as most all coffees, tastes best when you can truly taste the differing characteristics of the bean.  If you make it too weak, all you get is a really lame version of the best...now it may still be the best you have ever tasted, but believe me, it will not be the best of the best.

So how do you know when you have made it to the right strength level...well, all I can say is, "You will know, you will know..."

Now I reckon you could receive the same instruction for a number of life's events and challenges...

What would happen if you looked at cost savings when building a fence to protect a favorite creature...like the alpaca...say you put only one fence post for every 20 feet or so, instead of every 7 or 8 feet?  Bet you would not have the most secure fence there...you would have a fence...sort of...but you really have a lame version of the best.

How about if you got put in charge of setting up an engine for a race car?  Say you decided to only put wiring to 6 of the 8 cylinders and only put brakes on three of the four wheels...hey, while you were at it you decided to dilute the fuel your race team uses for the race...then you went out and hired the hottest race car driver you could find.  On race day do ya think you would win????  Don't really think so...sounds like a lame version of the best to me!

Now these are foolish what ifs...I am really talking about coffee here, right?  I really want you to not settle for a taste that is a figment of your imagination...a product of brain washing by advertisement...kind of like some of the political ads you will be seeing this year! :o)  Let's look at the possible hints for making a good mug of coffee...

First, you will need a very good coffee maker...one with an excellent heating element, one that you can trust to make the brew you are seeking.  Second, you will need a good coffee (this is your choice because it is your best friend in this endeavor).  Now...you will begin developing your technique...a method you will come to rely on in the early morning hours when it is soooo important to sip on a good mug of coffee to get your day started in just the right way.

How do you develop your technique???  Good question!  A good technique is simply one that allows you to be consistent in your successful venture of coffee making excellence.  You can begin, as my Jude does, by placing a level, sort of level scoop of coffee in the brewer for each cup measured up until you come to the last two...then you stop!!  This will - more than likely - give you the desired consistent taste experience you seek.  OR you can take my approach and put one heaping, heaping scoopful for every two measured cups...this can be a wonderful but risky way to begin.  Better yet, if you have a brewer that brews 12 cups of joe at a whack and you always fill the brewer to the max...well, you can take a cup measure and fill it level with coffee and start it up!  This will be a good pot...if the coffee used is good as well...and the pot can produce the right heat level!  Variables...you know!

So, this month you are getting two coffee pieces for the price of one...and maybe two personal notes for the same price...whatever...enjoy your mug of coffee, use The Alpaca Bean roasts if possible, and once you have your personal technique down...hey, give me a call or drop me a line.  Let me know that you have reached that proud moment and believe me, I will be proud for you!

Until then...

Peace,
