New Arrival

Another New Arrival! ELOISE IN PARIS, first edition in dust jacket, published in 1957. $395. The second of the books about Eloise, a precocious 6 year old girl who lives in the Plaza Hotel in New York with a Nanny (who's rawther British) a turtle named Skipperdee who eats raisins and wears sneakers, and a dog, Weenie, who looks like a cat. "Here is what Eloise does in Paris: everything. The result is rawther extraordinaire."
The text by Kay Thompson captures the energetic, rapid-fire, never-ending sentences characteristic of a 6 year old -- and is complemented perfectly by whimsical and delightfully detailed illustrations by Hilary Knight.
There was speculation that Eloise was based on Kay Thompson's goddaughter, Liza Minnelli; but when asked to confirm this, Thompson replied: "I am Eloise!" We also have in stock first editions of other Eloise titles, as well as later editions.

the Regency. There were ten editions before 1800. This is the
seventeenth edition, 1820, revised by Jacob Schnebbelie. $300 We have many food and wine books and ephemera in the store, most of more
recent vintage, but many from the earlier part of the 20th century --
please come in and browse, or contact us with what you are looking for. Some of the cookbooks are listed on our web site, keyword "cookbook."

Rhythm and Blues Classic
Listen to the Lambs, was written by Johnny Otis, performer, bandleader, and a prominent figure in the history of rhythm and blues. From the dust jacket: "This is a book that grew out of a letter to a friend, triggered by the Watts riot of 1965. Johnny Otis had lived most of his life as a negro -- by choice, for he was born a Greek-American. ...he felt compelled to explain to an expatriate friend the why, the how, the terror of Watts... to do so, Johnny Otis had to tell his own story as well." A scarce book in any condition, this is an exceptionally nice-looking first edition in dust jacket. $500

Spiritualism, and Seances, and Mind-Readers, Oh My!
In the mid 1800s through the mid 1900s, Spiritualism, seances, and mediums, which purported communication with the dead, were very popular both here in the U.S. and in England.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a staunch adherent of spiritualism, while
Houdini, who was first drawn to spiritualism because of the death of
his mother, became one of its most famous de-bunkers. We have several books from a recent acquisition which deal with the phenomenon of Spiritualism, both pro and con. Pictured above is A Thought-Reader's Thoughts, Being the Impressions and Confessions of Stuart Cumberland. London, 1888. Cumberland was a mind reader who knew many of the tricks of the trade -- and used them to debunk the chicanery. He exposed Spiritualists, and performed before Heads of State. This copy is ex-libris Charles L. Rulfs (private) Library of Conjuring, with pencilled glossing, possibly by Rulfs.Very Scarce. $250.00 We also have: An Amazing Seance and an Exposure by Sydney A. Moseley. (Intro by A. Conan Doyle) and Sixty Years of Psychical Research: Houdini and I Among the Spiritualists. by Joseph F. Rinn., as well as other titles (search our web site using keyword "spiritualism")
