Children's Classics
We hope that everyone had a chance to see the Newberry Library's recent children's book exhibit. Many treasures from Puritan times through the Golden Age of children's books were beautifully presented.* Chicago Rare partner, Ann Dumler, collector, Laura F., and illustrator, Sue Shanahan, toured the exhibit with much glee and enthusiasm. Chicago Rare Book Center has many collectible children's books, but also many inexpensive copies of classics. Several books of Peter Newell's were huge favorites at the exhibition. We have on hand a 100th year anniversary edition of Newell's The Topsy Turvys priced at $4.95 and in mint condition. This is a good buy for a gift, or just fun reading. In a slightly more expensive range we have a fine example of a small paper reading book from Ginn and Co., 1922. The Beacon Reading Chart is a pre-cursor to Dick and Jane, has wonderful pictures, and is in Fine condition ($60). Other collectible children's books in stock include first American editions of Winnie the Pooh ($250), and Now We Are Six ($80)Hopefully, all of you who love children's books will have a chance to visit us at our Evanston store, where we have many children's books that we have not yet listed online.*Note: We hope in the future to let you know about exhibits like this before they happen, not after. However, our newsletter wasn't up and running yet at the time of the exhibit. You can view some information and images from the exhibit here)

The photographs in this book record many of the notables that congregated in swinging London in the 60s. First ed. $100Pictured above is Paul Strand's Living Egypt with text by James Aldridge (1969). American Guide Series
"For eight turbulent years, the New Deal kept literally thousands of writers from starvation in one of the most massive and explosive cultural aid programs the United States has ever devised -- the Federal Writers' Project." from Jerry Mangione's book The Dream and the Deal: The Federal Writers' Project, 1935-1943.The American Guide series, part of the Project, produced 48 state guides, plus guides for D.C., Puerto Rico, and Alaska; about 30 guides to cities such as New York, New Orleans, and Los Angeles. There were also other book length guides, such as U.S. One, which followed Highway One from Maine through to Florida. There were also books and pamphlets published which dealt with small-town America, such as a guide to Galena, authored by Nelson Algren. The state guides were usually divided into sections: the first part were essays dealing with the history, setting, and culture and commerce in the state; the second part dealt with the cities; the third and longest part has tours that follow the highways through many parts of the state. Most original editions have folding maps in a back pocket in the book. Reprints often have the maps on the endpapers. Chicago Rare has quite a few of the state guides in stock. You can check what's available by entering "WPA" in the search box on our web site www.chicagorare.com
