Visitor E-news October 2012

Greetings,

Fall has definitely arrived here on the Boothbay peninsula. There is a crispness to the air, pumpkins and mums have appeared in displays all over town, and the leaves have begun to change. The dramatic reds, oranges and golds have added quite a dramatic flair to our landscape.

There are lots of ways to celebrate fall in the Boothbay Harbor Region. Over Columbus Day Weekend, there will be the 45th Annual Fall Foliage Festival at the Boothbay Railway Village. On that same weekend, you can visit Damariscotta and Pumpkinfest where a number of creative local artists have turned giant pumpkins into works of art.

Are you looking to see some of our gorgeous fall foliage during your visit? Click here to see the foliage map put out by Yankee Magazine. It should be able to help you plan your visit to take advantage of peak foliage season.

With the changing of the leaves and the cooling of the temperature, the pace of life here in the Boothbay Harbor Region has slowed. As our summer season winds down, we would like to thank all of the innkeepers, restauranteurs, merchants, boat captains, activity specilists and countless employees for their hard work this season. We would also like to thank all of the visitors who stopped by to make this summer a memorable one. After this issue, our e-news will be sent out once a month - look for the next edition to arrive in early-to-mid-November.

Warm wishes,

Catherine Wygant Fossett

Executive Director

The Harbor Theatre would like to thank over 140 people for donations both large and small. Thanks to their generosity, The Harbor Theatre will be able to convert from 35mm film to "D-Cinema" during the first quarter of 2013. Whether the theatre will be able to get 35mm movies until a digital projector can be installed in 2013 is the next big question. If The Harbor Theatre is unable to get 35mm movies it may have to close for a few months until the new digital projector can be installed. This is an unfortunate "unknown", but as long as the theatre can get film, it will stay open this winter.

Author George Daughan To Speak About 1812: The Navy's War

Friday, October 12, 2012

Perhaps no war in American history is as overlooked as the War of 1812. Yet with its 200th anniversary, historian and award-winning author George C. Daughan argues that this war changed the shape of the world. In "1812: The Navy's War", Daughan offers a comprehensive history of what has been called our Second War of Independence. Encompassing political, diplomatic, economic, as well as military history, he brings the battles to life, putting them in context with the larger war, and showing how the war couldn't have been won without America's foundling Navy. George Daughan plans to speak at the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library's October 12 Literary Luncheon.  The cost for lunch, provided by Red Cup, is $10.  Registrations can be made at the library up until Thursday, October 11.  For more information, call the library at 633-3112.

Pink Rocks October Artist of the Month

Jennifer Litchfield

Jen Litchfield has been living and painting in Maine for the past 16 years. Originally from Australia, where she pursued a medical career as a general practitioner in Sydney for 20 years, she moved to the United States in 1994 after meeting and marrying her American husband, Peter Felsenthal, with whom she lives on Barters Island. Jen will say that art has always been one of her great loves. Her subject matter includes the landscape of New England and Europe, still life, and portraits. Smaller landscapes are painted en plein air and the larger works are painted in the studio using sketches and her own digital photographic references. She would describe her style as bold and colorful - a mix of realism and impressionism. Jen Litchfield's art is represented by the Hunter Gallery of Fine Art in Grafton, Vermont, and this month by Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library. If you would like to see her display, then go to the library any time during their business hours of 10:00 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, excepting Wednesday when they close at 7:00 p.m.
