Greetings,
It is that time of year again, when school buses rumble back to life and students and teachers start a new school year. It has been an exciting summer for the Boothbay Peninsula. Yachting Magazine has listed Boothbay Harbor as one of the top 50 yachting destinations in North America. If you didn't get a chance to visit us this summer, let the staff of Maine Magazine take you through 48 Hours in Boothbay Harbor, a memorable adventure that they shared with Channel 6 News.
In addition to being the start of a new academic adventure, September is also a month filled with exciting events here in the Boothbay Region. The Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce is excited to present the First Annual Claw Down, a competition for local chefs to present their best lobster bite to be judged by a panel of industry-leading experts and for a chance to win the coveted People's Choice Award. The Claw Down is followed by Restaurant Week, where a dozen local eateries will offer a special three-course menu for $24.95. The fun food festivities will conclude with the first annual Harbor Fest, a fun family event being put on by Marketing Cents 4U.
September also offers a variety of craft fairs and shows, fairs, festivals, and more. School may have started, but there is still a lot going on in our area!
Warm wishes,
Catherine Wygant

GridSolar's mission is to develop a Smart Grid Platform that will allow Maine to achieve higher levels of efficiency in the generation, transmission and use of electricity through increased use of distributed and renewable generation, energy efficiency and conservation in lieu of building expensive new high-voltage power lines. The Boothbay Smart Grid Reliability Pilot Project is a 3-year pilot project involving the development (through a solicitation to third-party providers) and operation of up to 2,000 kW of smart grid projects located in Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, and Southport. Each qualified project must reduce the amount of power imported into the region at periods of peak use. The Pilot Project is designed to test both the cost and effectiveness of ensuring grid reliability using a range of smart grid solutions, including energy efficiency, demand response, renewable distributed generation (at least half of which shall be photovoltaic solar energy), and non-renewable distributed generation (with preference given to resources with no net emissions of greenhouse gases). For more information, email info@gridsolarme.com or visit www.grisolarme.com Smart Grid Pilot Project Workshop - Tues Sept. 11, 5-7 pm Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens Bosarge Education Center The Maine PUC has designated the Boothbay peninsula as the location for a 3-year pilot project to demonstrate the power of a "Smarter Grid" to avoid the expense of new power line construction while lowering energy costs and reducing pollution. Under the pilot, GridSolar, the smart grid energy services coordinator, will issue a Request For Proposals next fall seeking bids from energy consumers and generators to provide solutions that either reduce energy use or generate power locally. Example solutions may include rooftop solar, tidal or wind power, energy efficient lighting and cooling, load shifting or back up generation. This workshop will explain the project and introduce area business and institutions to energy service providers that can help them design qualifying proposals. Winning bids will be paid to save or generate power. Come learn how you can participate and enjoy hors d'oeuvres and drinks. At the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library:
September Artist of the Month: Suzanne Marinell
Su zanne Marinell is a summer resident of Maine. She is also the Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library's September Artist of the Month. Her paintings are often inspired by places that she has explored here. The changeable beauty, sometimes dramatic, sometimes mysteriously misty, never ceases to awe her. In Pennsylvania, her residence the rest of the year, she enjoys the beauty of the Wissahickon, Fort Washington State Park, the Morris Arboretum, the Schuylkill River, and the flowers in her own back yard. They have all urged her to get out the paint brush so as to try to capture and interpret their magic. Suzanne also likes to explore different ways of creating art. She has worked longest with watercolors, but experimenting with melted crayons has helped her to concentrate on color and abstraction. She occasionally turns to acrylics and oils. Combining writing and painting is exciting to her and she has illustrated several of her own stories.
