Catherine Mahan, President of Mahan Rykiel Associates, will speak on creating sustainable healing environments as part of a panel selected to present at Healthcare Design '09, the nation's leading conference on health and design to be held in Orlando, FL, Oct 31 - Nov. 3. The panel will present the case study of the Mary Catherine Bunting Center at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, where Mahan Rykiel designed a series of roof gardens and outdoor spaces to complement the mission of the new hospital. Dealing with an urban hospital with limited available space to expand, the design team crafted a new building that embraced the nearby park, and featured a series of accessible roof gardens available to staff and patients for respite. Other panelists will be Adrian Hagerty, AIA, and Jim Curran, AIA representing the project architect Ellerbe Becket, and Judith Weiland of Mercy Hospital.
