Garden Talks

1.    Our full series of Fall Classes is almost set! We are not quite ready to release the entire list but we do know about these upcoming classes:

Saturday August 20 10 AM Fresh Floral Arranging ($15 fee) Come and make your own special arrangement of fresh flowers; we will show you how! This is a most popular class!  (The Falmouth class is full but we do have very limited openings in Cumberland. Call 829-5619 to sign up in Cumberland).

Saturday August 27 10 AM Dividing, Relocating and Transplanting Class (Free)

Don't be shocked! We'll show you how to move your plants so they can grow and grow and grow! Fall is a great time to replan and rearrange the garden; upcoming cooler temperatures make fall a great time for planting! (Brunswick, Cumberland and Falmouth)

Space is limited so reserve as soon as you can by calling one of the above phone numbers or contacting us at skillins@maine.rr.com!

There will be a $50 gift certificate reward for attending a certain amount of classes in this series. That number of classes has not been set yet but attendance at these classes will count toward the prize!

3. Mike's Must Have Perennial Pick for this week is the Joe Pye Weed (Eupatorium).

Joe Pye Weed

Joe Pye Weed-Eupatorium

Joe Pye is a "Mike Pick" because I like the height of the tall edition of Joe Pye. This plant makes an excellent backdrop with its dark green foliage and reddish gray, long lasting and large flowers. Although the plant can be found in many places it is always makes a distinctive presence in your garden.

The above photo was taken at early dusk--so the light is not real bright here. In front of the Joe Pye plant is tall hardy phlox and in front of the phlox is a peony plant. This is a good staging of color.. The Joe Pye plant pictured here is about 6 feet tall.
