2. Mike's Must Have Perennial for the Week is the Perovskia Atriplicifolia aka perennial "Russian Sage".
This plant is a Must Have--a necessity for your perennial garden!
Why?
1. The striking gray blue color. This plant makes a great background plant and is best planted in mass. Once in place your eye is drawn to this plant. You gaze at this plant again and again.
2. It is a very hardy plant--especially if it is not cut back in the fall because it grows primarily on old wood. Cut it back in the Spring for shaping only once the new growth has started to form. It also should be well mulched in the fall; this plant is a sun lover and that often means it's place in the garden can be exposed to high temperature variations if there is no snow cover.

3. The winter interest is great with this plant. The plants gets tall and can contrast well with the stark white of Skillin Country snow as well as the deep greens of evergreens further back in the landscape.

3. It has been a wonderful season for the vegetable garden and we have lots of tips for you for sure. We are getting lots of tomato questions and we have answers! August is the month when many of our plants are ready for harvest. Check your plants as often as you can because you want to pick the fruit while it is young and tender. Don't let your cukes get too fat--they are sweeter when they are younger. Pick your beans before the seeds bulge too much!
Our vegetable plants have lots of production to go so now is a great time to give them a liquid boost of an all natural fertlizer like Neptune's Harvest Fish and Seaweed food (sold right here at Skillin's). Our squashes, cukes, tomatoes, and late plantings of beans, peas, lettuces and Swiss chard could use a nice boost of liquid refreshment!
Keep giving your vegetables deep waterings. This will give you more beans, more cukes and cracking of your tomatoes!
