Hello again,

Welcome to another edition of Garden Talks Online by Skillin's Greenhouses! We have been "online" since 1999 and "on the ground" in Skillin's Country since 1885. We work every day to keep your trust and  realize that in 2011 your time is very precious.

Well I spent some time on Tuesday making some deliveries in various parts of Skillin's Country. And I am happy to report that truly The Grass is Getting Greener in Skillin's Country! Rain almost as cold as snow? Check! (We have had that and are soon to get more!). Winds that test the resolve of many a tree (and have snapped more than a few limbs)?  Check! We have had that! Frost particles the size of coins on our pansies? Check! I have blown more than a few of those sharp edged particles off with water in the last few days! But with my own eyes I am seeing that the grass is indeed getting greener in Skillin's Country. Folks that is more than a sign! It is fact! Who says that the grass is always greener someplace else? The grass is in fact getting greener by the day right here in your yard and my yard and that yard over here and that yard over there! So keep the faith, keep marching forward fellow gardeners. As I wrote last week: We Believe!

Some of you may think I am crazy; that next I will tell you the yellow daffodil flowers are actually in bloom or that the PJM rhododendrons are about to flower! Oh yeah, I might even be crazy enough to think that the forsythia is about to show off it's yellow glory! Well, crazy I might be but you just wait and see....

Tim Bate of Skillin's Nursery wants you to know that all trees (including fruit trees) are on sale through this weekend for 20% off. We have a great selection of trees in stock that can fit all occasions and needs in the landscape. And many of our trees are in great easy to handle pots and can be conveniently transported home. We can show you how to plant the new gem of your landscape as well or provide a helpful list of Maine professional landscapers who can easily help you out! Earth Day 2011 is this Friday April 22--what better way to "better" our planet than to plant a tree that will benefit all of us for decades!

We grow our own Easter lilies at Skillin's and they are just gorgeous this year. The multiple blossoms on each plant are just a lovely, lovely clean white. And so fragrant! Place them in a well lit spot and enjoy them for several weeks in your home! They also make a great gift starting at just $10.99 and of course we deliver all over Skillin's Country!

Easter lilies

Easter Lilies "Maine Grown" at Skillin's and Ready for You!

After your lily stops flowering, it may be planted outside and will probably come back year after year. Here are just a few steps to take:

Once the lily has stopped flowering, remove it from it's high profile spot but keep it in a well-lit area somewhere. Cut back on the watering; let it go quite dry to the touch. When you do water the lily, give it a small dose of a good quality houseplant fertilizer (we have many good choices right here at Skillin's!). After the foliage has turned light green, cut the stem off right down to the bulb. Then, the bulb can be planted outside in a sunny area. Plant the bulb in some good organic matter at least 3 times deep as the bulb is wide. We find the Easter lilies will come back year after year!

Now is a good time to do selected pruning of dead and dying stems on your perennials and shrubs. For instance I prune my Endless Summer blue Hydrangea very sparingly but after this winter my plant  clearly had some growth that died off during the winter so I pruned those ends off. I have left a nice shape on the bush and am starting to see some nice new growth! I have also done the same for my perennial Montauk daisies, rose bushes and Pee Gee hydrangeas to name a few. How can you tell dead stems? Any growth that does not have green on the inside of the bark is probably dead and should get cut out. Now is NOT THE TIME TO PRUNE live growth on Spring flowering shrubs and trees like lilacs, rhododendrons, kousa dogwood and azaleas. Prune immediately after they flower but not now.

Lilacs!

Now is NOT the Time to Prune Your Lovely Lilacs!

Soon I will spread my annual Spring application of Lawn Booster by Organicato my lawn. Lawn Booster (sold right here at Skillin's is a corn gluten product--all natural- that can help prevent overwhelming weed seeds like crabgrass, dandelions and others from germinating in the lawn. Corn gluten is a great organic source of nutrients including nitrogn that really help the grass "green up" and stay greener longer. I highly recommend applying corn gluten twice per year--now before the forsythia blossoms drop and then again around Labor Day (early to mid September). Now this year I have already put down some of my favorite grass seed--Black Beauty Tall Fescue by Jonathan Green--in some spots on my lawn. I will NOT be putting the Lawn Booster over those areas as I do not want the corn gluten to discourage the grass seed. In that situation I will be using Espoma's Organic Lawn Food

How are your flowering bulbs doing? This is a great time to add some Bulb Tone (or Plant Tone) by Espoma into the soil around your bulb plants. The reason for this is because our bulbs in the ground are actively growing right now. So the bulbs will take the nutrients we provide and get even larger and stronger for next year. Make some holes in the ground about 3 to 4 inches deep about 4 to 5 inches from the bulbs and pour the all natural fertilizer into the holes. Fill the holes up and soon the nutrients from these fertilizers will be used by the bulbs to grow bigger and stronger. This means more flowers next year! Do you have some plants with all shoots and no flowers? Carefully dig the bulbs up. Check to see that they are firm. Then plant them about 3 inches DEEPER with a healthy dose of Bulb Tone by Espoma. If the soil seems very wet, consider moving the bulbs to a better drained location. Also check for sun exposure. Flowering bulbs want as much sun as possible for best performance.
