Hello again,
If it is snow you want and like, it is snow you have! Of course, if you don't like snow we still have it here in Skillin's Country! But that is okay--when we do see the sun, it seems a little brighter and yes the days are indeed getting longer. We have high snowbanks with more snow on the way. But our primroses, forced flowering bulbs like daffodils, geraniums and green, green "cat grass" are looking better than ever. Drop by for a look! Right now is one of my favorite times in our greenhouses--thanks to our great staff the greenhouses look great!
Oh while I think of it, I hope our Florida friends are having some good weather (yes Ellen and Lloyd, Carol and Frank, Dale and Elsie and Mr. R. I am thinking of all of you and I say hello!)
Before I forget: This Tuesday, February 1 our Spring Bonds go on sale! 2011 is the 21st year of selling our pre-season SPRING BONDS. When you purchase a $50 bond you pay only $37.50!!! Buy Your Skillin's Spring Bond Starting Feb 1! Skillin's Spring Bonds--the Original and Still the Best!! |
We have an awesome class this Saturday, January 29 called Orchids and Their Care. Special guest instruction from the Maine Orchid Society! Orchids are one of the most rewarding houseplants you could ever have. Let us show you how to easily care for them in your home. Special note for Cumberland class goers: Our original intent was to discuss Native Orchids in Cumberland. Our scheduled instructor is not able to make this class. We have a fine substitute for the class but the emphasis will be on indoor or tropical orchids as in our Brunswick and Falmouth classes. This is a great class and one that we REALLY hope you can make!
Class times are 10 AM. Our Cumberland and Falmouth classes are full but we do have openings in Brunswick!
You can reserve a space by calling any of the above numbers OR by contacting us at skillins@maine.rr.com (just specify the store and time!).
Let us show you how to "do it right". Going to Skillin's classes will save you valuable time and help you get great results! |

Garden Talks
Hey folks, the days are getting a little longer! We have gained close to 40 minutes since the shortest day of the year (December 21). It is a great time to start seeds for perennials, geraniums and fun hanging plants like verbena and fuschia. We have a great variety of seeds that are available! One of my favorite companies that we feature is a seed company called Botanical Interests--a family business based in Colorado. Their focus is to provide high quality seed at a reasonable price. Their seed packets feature incredible detail about the plant you will be growing. Not only how to grow the plant but the best uses as well as history for the plant. Check out Botanical Interests seeds here at Skillin's. A lot of seed and a lot of information for not much money! Here are some more late January gardening tips:
Design and plan the spring garden space. Early planning allows time to research plants' habits and performances. Review notes and photographs from the previous year."Now is the time for planning! Let us know if we can help you with any aspects of landscape design!
It is time to inventory and then gather your indoor seed starting supplies! We have all you need for seed starting here at Skillin's!
Start perennials, geraniums and pansies. I was just down to our production greenhouse and we have some healthy looking fushcia babies that we are transplanting into their summer pots!
Remember to water forcing bulbs. As the roots develop on the bulbs that are being forced for indoor flowering, the demand for water increases. Check each pot every two or three days; it should feel moist, but not saturated. This is great advice and can often be missed.
Care for house plants. During the dark winter months many of our house plants become dry and vulnerable. Move even shade-loving plants such as begonias and ferns into a sunny area. Be sure to remove any excess water from containers, yet frequently spray the plants with a light mist - except for African violets. Keep plants away from a direct heat source, or a cold window, and watch for insects. Fertilize lightly. Speaking of houseplants and their care we have recently posted two excellent articles about houseplant care to our Skillin's Garden Log! Check out "Clean Air Houseplants" and and "Keeping Houseplants Healthy in Winter".
Re-coat your evergreen plants with an anti-desiccant such as all natural Wilt-Pruf on a dry day when temperatures rise above 45 degrees. This will help the plants' foliage retain the limited moisture available until spring.
