Skillin's is Out There!!!
Hello again,

The month of August is flying by us in Skillin's Country and we hope the Best Summer of Recent Memory is treating you well!

As our gardens grow, they meander, they become worn in some spots and they may even look old the longer you gander. One thing about this time of year is that our gardens are in our plain sight; right in front of us showing us the GOOD, the bad and the...potential.

Let's unearth that...potential! Time to talk rejuvenation, want to discuss transformation? Turn your garden into a sensation? Then check out our class this Saturday, August 28 called Dividing, Relocating and Transplanting. Don't be shocked! We'll show you how to move your plants so they can grow and grow and grow!

Class times are 10 AM for Brunswick and Cumberland (10 AM in Falmouth is Sold Out) and a special 1 PM encore class in Falmouth. Call Brunswick 442-8111 (1-800-339-8111), Cumberland 829-5619 (1-800-348-8498), or Falmouth 781-3860 (1-800-244-3860) to register. A Well Tended Garden Bed!
A Recent Houseplant Class Setup

Fall is a great time for planting and we have some dramatic sales going on: Perennials on sale for 30% off when you buy 3 or more plants, Shrubs are 30% off and Trees are 50% off. "Oh great" you might be thinking, "sales on worn out stock, why waste my time"! No waste of time folks; this is Skillin's! Fresh material on sale is what we have for you! As I type these very words, freshly grown plants are on their way from our Partner Growers as well as our own Greenhouses for you to check out!

Late summer and fall is a great time to plant because the ground is warmer and the air temperatures are more moderate making it a perfect time of year to plant new plants or to transplant old friends!

For some great reading and reference on the topic of Dividing, Transplanting and Relocating check out "Divide and Conquer" by KCB which we printed in the Skillin's Garden Log at this time last year. Anything written by KCB is timeless--in fact anything written by KCB improves with age--but don't we all!

Some timely garden tips for you:

*Plant another burst of lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, beets, peas, spinach, swiss chard or radishes now. Just because your first crop has fizzled out  does not mean your fresh salads with dinner are over for the season. You still have plenty of time to harvest these delicious vegetables and enjoy more fresh produce! We have fresh crops of lettuce and broccoli and new vegetable seeds ready for you!

*Now is a great time to give many of your evergreen shrubs such as yews, junipers and hemlocks their summer trim or haircut. I have just done this in in my own yard. While I was giving my evergreens some trimming I also fed them some Holly Tone by Espoma. Talk about rejuvenation! Holly Tone is a granular organic fertilizer that works slowly but steadily to benefit the soil that the roots reside in. A better soil means better and deeper roots in the long run. These better roots help sustain the  plant through dry summers (like this one) and help the plants "green up" more quickly after cold winters (we do get cold  winters  in Skillin's Country).

*Now is a great time for perennial transformation! This is a great time to fill in the bare spots (with our Buy 3 Get 30% off Perennial sale). Many perennials can get cut back and dead headed; also pull any weeds that are competing with your perennials for water and sunlight. As I discussed above with evergreen shrubs now is a good time to rejuvenate your perennial garden soil with a good organic food like Flower Tone (or Plant Tone) by Espoma! Nothing like a good healthy meal! What a sensation!

25-Composting Class

Let us give you "the poop" on making your garden soil richer in a highly natural way. Wise gardeners know the key to good gardening is the soil and the key to good soil is....COMPOST!

Fall is just an excellent time to spread compost on vegetable gardens, annual beds and around your perennials to improve your soil. After you clean out your vegetable and annual plants and have pulled the last of this season's weeds take the time to lay out a good couple of inches of good natural compost on top of your soil. Over the remaining fall and early in the Spring this compost will break down nice and slowly and give your soil a new and improved texture and cell structure. Your worms and other beneficial organisms will love it, your plants roots will love it and next year your plants are sure to show you their appreciation!

One compost we most often recommend is called Quoddy Blend by Coast of Maine Organics. Quoddy Blend is made from composted crab, lobster and aspen bark. The crab and lobster shells are a rich source of calcium and chitin, the aspen bark a source of tannins and lignins. It's a blend that's perfect for your vegetable garden, especially for your tomatoes! The calcium content is beneficial for lilacs and roses too.
