| Hello again,
This coming weekend March 19 through March 21 is our Spring Open House at Skillin's Falmouth. The first day of Spring is March 20 so this will truly be the first Garden Show of the Spring. This show is quite the annual event and will feature landscape exhibits, tasty refreshments, colorful plants and scents that will immediately inject you with the spirit of Spring and lots and lots of items on sale!
Here is our class schedule for this weekend:
Saturday (March 20 in Falmouth) (all classes free of charge and worth much more!)
9 AM Vegetable Gardening (Tony DiPietro, Master Gardener, Guest Instructor)
Tony has been a local Maine vegetable gardener for many years and has lots of experience to impart. He can talk expertly about gardening in large spaces as well as small spaces; he really embraces the Square Foot Gardening concepts. We have created more space for the class room so this class is now NOT sold out; we do have room and good seating for about 10 more inquisitive gardeners. We need to take a reservation for this class so if you are among the first 10 to respond at skillins@maine.rr.com we will sign you up for this Can't Miss Class! Just let us know ASAP! 11 AM Gardening Organically (with Charlie Shields of Espoma Company)
We have known Charlie for a long time and he and his associates have been a big help to us at Skillin's over the years. The Espoma Company has been a leader in the organic gardening field for some time now and they are always on the cutting edge of new and better ideas. But Charlie has seen a few things in his time and can impart much wisdom from the past as well. (no reservation needed; walk ins welcome!)
2 PM Lawn Care (Jesse O'Brien of Downeast Turf Co.)
Jesse O'Brien has been associated with Skillin's since the 1970's and helped Skillin's grow a great deal as our Nursery Manager in the 1980's. Jesse now is a co-owner of Downeast Turf Company here in Maine. So Jesse has many years of experience with turf and also many years of retail experience. He is also a darned good teachers as is many students at SMCC and UMO can attest to. We are pleased and honored to have our esteemed friend Jesse O'Brien back for our 2 PM Lawn Care class. We hope you can make it! (no reservation needed; walk ins welcome!) Saturday (March 20 in Brunswick and Cumberland)10 AM and 2 PM Pruning for a Purpose (expert instruction provided by Well Tree of Maine) (reservation is required; contact us at skillins@maine.rr.com or the above phone #s)
To prune or not to prune, that is the growing question. Proper pruning makes our outdoor trees and shrubs look great and healthy. We are bringing in some experts to show you how to "do it right the first time" and every time. Learn techniques to help rejuvenate and keep your landscape in shape. Free Sunday (March 21 in Falmouth) (all classes free of charge and worth much more!) 11 AM New Plants for Skillin's for 2010! Shrubs, Perennials, Annuals
(entertaining AND expert instruction provided by Tim Bate, Becky Moening and Mike Skillin)
Excited does not describe my feelings for this class! In my 23 adult years at Skillin's I have never been so intrigued by the diversity and interest that all of our new plant additions offer this year.(this is true!) Tim and Becky have been slaving away to create a great program for you and I will be on hand as well. (this too is true). We will cheer, we will exult, we will laugh but we will not cry unless we cry out "I can't wait to see these plants in MY garden". This could be a life changing experience for all! (don't bet against this being true!) This is a good chance to get an up close and personal look at some great new plants.
(no reservation needed; walk ins welcome!)
2 PM Growing Edibles in Containers! (enthusiastic and expert instruction by Melissa Madigan)
Melissa taught a highly acclaimed Windowsill Gardening class this past February and in that class discussed Winter growing of vegetables and herbs for the indoors. Melissa and Mary of Skillin's Falmouth did a great deal of indoor edible gardening this past winter and Melissa is going to give tips on how you can grow fresh vegetables and herbs in the home during all weather times. She will also be able to give tips on growing edibles outdoors as she will be teaching our Container Edibles this April. (no reservation needed; walk ins welcome!)
