My oh my is this late winter weather awesome in Skillin's Country! I have done some quick walking around my perennial beds at home and the "feel" of this season "feels" like mid April right now. But don't rush into the outdoor gardening season just yet! Areas that I have mulched in my perennial garden, I am still going to leave the mulch on until the end of the month. There are a couple of areas that I covered really thickly and I am going to leave mulch there although I may pull about half of that cover soon. That will still leave half to "break in" these plants. I also am going to leave my hybrid tea roses covered for another week or two. Again I may pull some cover off. I also am not going to prune my roses until the first week of April. I also have some high spots on my lawn that are drying well so I may do some gentle raking in those areas. But much of my lawn is still wet and even though my entire lawn needs a good raking it is best to wait another week or two and let the lawn dry out a little bit more. Too much early raking can actually tear out too much grass. Also if the soil is still wet you not only get wet feet BUT you can pack down and thereby compress your soil too soon. Let things dry some more.

I do live on a busy road and I am going to rake off the salty sand soon because the street sweepers are due to come by soon. In an area like that now is a good time to lay down some gypsum. Gypsum will get into the soil and work against salt damage. It also provides material to stay in the soil and keep air pockets open. This helps your soil as well near the road.

Good gardening friend Paul Tukey has some good gardening advice to share:

"Sow celery, leeks, beets and peppers indoors early in the month. Avoid the temptation to start others until early April to avoid leggy plants. Egg plant and catnip may be started indoors late in the month." Jeff Skillin is adamant that tomatoes should not be started from seed until April 15 or even April 20. See the chart above for more details about correct seed starting times.

"Finish pruning of fruit trees without delay and (start) applications of dormant oil spray." We sell safe and easy to use products to apply to your fruit trees! Please contact us with any good questions OR come in to see us. Or check this great post about Fruit Tree Care at the Skillin's Garden Log!

"Renewal pruning that is severe is best accomplished this month before budding occurs." If you have the time, please consider attending our FREE Pruning for a Purpose class. Check our Mark the Calendar section above for the dates and times.
