Hello again,

Welcome to another edition of Garden Talks Online by Skillin's Greenhouses!

We have turned a corner and now we plunge into February. As I write these words, we do realize that the Ground Hog has seen his shadow in Pennsylvania. This allegedly means we are facing 6 more weeks of winter. For our Pennsylvania friends, 6 more weeks is probably a horrible prospect. For us folks in Skillin's Country 6 weeks more (and no more winter after that) may be a bargain we should think seriously about making!

We celebrate another exciting FREE Gardening Classes this Saturday February 6 at 10 AM in Falmouth and 2 PM in Brunswick with Landscape Design Principles. (Our  Falmouth class is sold out BUT we do have room at our Brunswick location. Also we have scheduled a Special encore class at 1 PM at Skillin's Cumberland) Join Chad Skillin as he discusses landscape design principles. Chad is Skillin's Landscape Designer and has great experience with landscaping and practical landscape designs. Let Chad educate you on some good solid landscape design practices as well as giving you some informal help with your yard design. This is also a great opportunity to schedule time with Chad to visit your yard and create an effective plan for you.

You can reserve a space by calling any of the above numbers OR by contacting us at skillins@maine.rr.com (just specify the store!).

Before I forget, we will also have some nice refreshments on hand for this Saturday's class as well for you to sample.

Garden Talks
February can be a busy and fun month for the indoor gardener. Here at Skillin's we are chock full of Spring flowering potted bulbs that have spent their winter in the same bulb cellar first used by my great grandfather Alexander "Pa" Skillin. hyacinths! What a Spring promise to the winter weary to sniff those fragrant hyancinth plants, to see the stately daffodils and to be charmed by those bright little crocus!

We do not have much snow load (if any) on our trees and shrubs. We are over due for some snow but if we do get snow at this point it could easily be of the wet and heavy variety. Do NOT try to remove that heavy snow and ice from the limbs of your trees and shrubs. Let nature take it's course and the warmer February sun should soon melt the snow and ice. If we try to remove that material itself we could easily snap cold brittle branches.

February 1 has arrived and that means our 20th year of selling Spring Bonds has arrived.

When you purchase a $50 bond you pay only $37.50!!! This 25% off coupon can be used anytime after April 1 for almost all regularly priced items.

Spring Bond 2010

Supplies are limited so buy your SPRING BONDS before they run out! Purchase your bonds at any Skillin's location OR www.skillins.com!

Beyond our windows the days ARE getting longer and the sun IS getting stonger. Now and into March is the best time to prune, propogate and repot many plants so they can take full advantage of the bright days of Spring and summer to grow and establish their roots....

Speaking of repotting, our good friends at Coast of Maine Organics (a Maine based company that makes superior organic gardening soils and amendments--Maine jobs! Products good for the environment!) make the absolute best potting and container soil (Bar Harbor Blend) I have ever used. I highly recommend it.  Bar Harbor Blend IS locally produced. Because it is trucked to us from close by, it costs less and we pass those savings onto you. These lower costs make for lower prices than brand name soils that frankly are less quality than the Bar Harbor Blend. The folks at Coast of Maine have just produced a video that in a short 2:41 explains the benefits of using their awesome Bar Harbor Blend potting soil.

Bar Harbor Blend!

Here is the link to this video: http://www.youtube.com/cameronbonsey. The awesome garden center pictured in the background might look familiar to you since the video was filmed at Skillin's Falmouth last week! After you watch the video, click on some of their other products to learn about the benefits of those products!
