BRAD DUNCAN WILL BE MISSED

bradcloseupBrad Duncan, most recently the chief of the CCC's Program Development and Support Division, passed away August 28 at the age of 58.  Any corpsmember participating in Corpsmember Development activities felt Brad's influence on the program.

Brad joined the CCC in 1979 as a Conservationist I, working at the Butte Fire Center and later promoting to a C II at the Del Norte Center.  In 1985, he moved to Sacramento to work as a Corpsmember Development analyst at headquarters, subsequently promoting to a manager in the same unit.

After a stint at the California Community Colleges and a short retirement, he returned to the CCC when Governor Schwarzenegger appointed him as Program Development and Support Division chief.

But these dates and locations don't tell the whole story.  Brad had the vision to broaden what corpsmembers learned, beyond the physical work on the grade.

As CCC Director David Muraki has noted, "Brad the professional, more than any single individual in the history of the CCC, understood and advanced corpsmember development to the benefit of so many."

Brad's contributions included the COMET (initial training) program; work/learn programs for corpsmembers; and "The Reading," promoting literacy and thinking through selected passages from books, articles and poems.  Brad also put an emphasis on increasing classroom time and the number of corpsmembers earning high school diplomas.

Most recently, Brad had spearheaded the "Green Pathways" for corpsmembers, to lead them to employment, education and longterm career opportunities.

FORMER GOVERNORS HONOR THE CCC
A recent Los Angeles reception hosted by the CCC Foundation and the California League of Cities honored four California former governors for their support of the CCC.

Present were Attorney General Jerry Brown, who created the CCC as governor, along with former Governors George Deukmejian and Gray Davis.  Former Governor Pete Wilson sent a letter that was read on his behalf.

Corpsmembers from the Camarillo Center, the Los Angeles Satellite and the Los Angeles Conservation Corps introduced the governors.  All of the governors praised the CCC; all had seen corpsmembers at work on emergency response efforts.

Jerry Brown recounted the early days of the program and recalled the CCC's "hard work, low pay" motto.  He noted that if all agencies had it as a motto, there would be no budget problem.

"The coming together of three governors in person and a fourth in sprit will long be remembered by the Corps as an historic event," said CCC Director David Muraki.
AUSTRALIAN EXCHANGE IN 22ND YEAR

Nine corpsmembers are working Down Under right now, part of the CCC's annual work exchange with Conservation Volunteers Australia.  The exchange began back in 1988, with what was then called the Australian Trust for Conservation Volunteers.

This year the CCC crew, headed by Los Padres (San Luis Obispo) C I Ben Herbert, is working in some new locations: Tasmania and Perth.  The work includes invasive plant removal, trail construction and wildlife habitat improvement.

Later this month, two Australian teams will arrive and work with CCC crews in San Luis Obispo and Ukiah.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

If you're sent to the principal at Masuda Middle School in Orange County, you'll be talking to Christopher Mullin, a former corpsmember who wasn't always enamored with education.

Chris Mullin graduated from high school and then tried a year of college.  It wasn't for him.  He was disillusioned and thought it was just more of what he'd just left, high school.

Then he saw a documentary about the Backcountry Trails program on television.  "So I up and joined, took the bus to the San Luis Obispo Academy," Chris says. "When that was over, there was a bus boarding for the Butte Fire Center.  They had room, so I got on it."

"Less than 24 hours after I arrived there they put me on a bus to go down to the Oakland Hills Fire site."  Chris was on food duty in the aftermath of the 1991 fire, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner to CDF crews.

That was his initial CCC trial by fire.  The Corps proved to be a good match for Chris, who loves the outdoors.  The following spring, he applied for the Backcountry Trails program and was accepted on to the 1992 Stanislaus National Forest crew, under Conservationist 1 Terrance Johnson.

"We worked in the Emigrant Wilderness, filled with lakes, and I'm a fisherman," Chris says. "I still talk about it all the time.  We built a ton of trails, did a lot of rock work, retaining walls.  And I kept in touch with people -- I made wonderful relationships and loved the work."

"I truly got a lifetime out of a little more than a year in the CCC..."

Back at the Butte Fire Center, one of the fire captains pushed Chris to go back to college, and he left the CCC for Montana State University.  Armed with an education degree, he began teaching in a tiny rural town.

During the summers Chris worked as a fly fishing guide in Montana, and served as guide for a California school superintendent who ended up offering him a job.  After teaching for five years, he got his master's in administration, became an assistant principal and now a principal. Chris' school is in Fountain Valley, in the same school district where he grew up.

Looking back, Chris says the CCC instilled a solid work ethic and he was fortunate to work with good leaders and strong mentors.

"I was a bit of a slacker and a disillusioned youth," he says. "The CCC helped give me a bigger picture of the real world.  I truly got a lifetime out of my little over a year in the CCC."
