What is Escrip?

Escrip is an easy way for the child care to earn FREE money!

As a shopper, when you use your debit card at select Retail stores, resturaunts, and Safeway - the child care recieves a donation from those Retailers, Stores, Resturaunts and Safeway!

Click on the escrip link above use our school code: 50003649 and sign up today.

Each company that participates with Escrip donates a percentage of purchases to the school of the shoppers choice!

For example - if you spend $100 on groceries at Safeway, Safeway will donate 2 - 10% of your total purchase to the childcare.  You dont have to do anything!  Except sign up your card.

The percentage varies from company to company and any special promotioins they may be offering.
Thank you!

North Queen Anne Child Care believes that for a child to succeed it requires a partnership between parents and teachers.  It is wonderful to be a part of our small community and the family that we have become.  A recent "graduate" of our program and her parents commented on the special friendships and relationships that were built here in the center, not only with the children, but with teachers, and other families.

The contributions that you make to our center as a parent, by your encouragement and support, your volunteering and participation in annual events and activities are part of what makes our center home.

To thank you we would like to have our annual Ice Cream Social on September 22 from 4 - 6 p.m.  In the main hallway or outside if the weather permits - we will have ice cream, toppings, cones, and great conversation.  We look forward to seeing you there.  (You and your child are invited to hang out a few extra minutes and enjoy the ice cream social.)

What Matters Most...The Soul of Parenting
Jan Pendergrass, FFMC Pastor for Children and Families

Dear Parents,
I know you are trying to eek out every last bit of summer! But if you're like me, you welcome the fall for many reasons. Personally, it's my favorite season with the leaves turning and the blue skies and clean, crisp air! And I can't help it, but I just feel and do better with family routines in place for school, even with all the activities!
At this time of transition and new beginnings, why not make a renewed commitment to the Spiritual Formation of your family? We'd love for you to join us at First Free Methodist. Here's what Sundays will look like for children, starting September 12th.

KidTown, 3rd floor (Elementary, K-5)9:30

They will be dismissed to go to KidTown during the sermon.

Wednesday Nights for Kids!  Our mid-week program kicks off on September 15th.  Why not join us for a very inexpensive but kid-friendly dinner after you pick up kids from the Center? For elementary kids, after dinner at 5:45, we'll offer open gym again from 6:15 to 6:45. The KidTown Clubhouse will then happen up on the 3rd floor until 7:45. For Preschoolers, we offer playtime, crafts and Bible stories starting in room 6 at 6:30. Our Wednesday night Preschool program is for kids whose parents are on-sight and involved with the Wednesday night adult programs. Nursery care is also provided, 6:30 to 7:45.  We hope to see you there!

Parent Education at NQACC
by Mary Ann Abbott, Parent Consultant North Seattle Community College

Parent Education is an important part of the program here North Queen Anne Child Care Center!

This article is to more fully explain how the connection between NQACC and North Seattle Community College works, both for new and continuing families at the Center. As a faculty member in the Health and Human Services Division at the College, I serve with about 20 other faculty members in the Parent Education Department.  NQACC has contracted with the College for over six years to bring parent education opportunities to the families here.

As Parent Consultant here, I am available to parents for consultation, support and encouragement, workshops, and the sharing of resources. This year, however, for the month of September, I am teaching English in Malawi, Africa; I will return to be at the Center on Wednesday, October 6, 4-6 pm to begin the year.
Parent education opportunities can take many venues; listed below is an overview of some offerings for the year.

WHAT'S AVAILABLE FOR PARENTS. . .
REGULAR VISITS-Starting October 6, Iwill bring parent resources to the Center twice a month on Wednesdays 4-6 p.m.  I'll be happy to chat informally about any parenting issues at that time.

WORKSHOPS-Workshops are being planned for selected months, usually on a Wednesday, 5-6 p.m. on topics of interest or by classroom groupings. More information to come.

The first scheduled parent workshop is "Kindergarten Readiness" for parents of children in Green Monkeys and Red Bears on Wednesday, November 17,  5-6 p.m.  It'll be an overview of kindergarten expectations for your child, how NQACC prepares students, and general questions from attendees. The children stay in center care while parents come to the workshop.  Watch for an opportunity to sign up.

CONSULTING-I am happy to schedule an appointment to talk in depth about an issue or concern, even discuss some parenting questions by email.   I can be reached by phone here at the Center or by email maryann@nqacc.org.

PARENT PAGE ARTICLES-Each month, I write an article on some aspect of parenting or child development. It might be an article about tantrums, family values, parenting styles, keeping one's child safe, or the one which I am researching/thinking about - the family and internet! It is hoped that each article will include some useful parenting tips for the parenting journey.

CLASSROOM VISITS---At a parent's request, I can observe a child in the classroom setting and give the parent feedback about the child's development/activities.  Several parents have found it useful to get a "snapshot" of their child's day.

PARENT DISCUSSION GROUP-Parents come together with the Parent
Consultant to exchange ideas on a given topic.

ONGOING PARENT DISCUSSION GROUP-Some parents may wish to come together often for support and conversation.  If this is something which appeals to you, please indicate such on the interest inventory in October.

PARENT INVENTORY-Will you share your parenting concerns by filling out a parent interest survey (available in October)? Knowing your concerns will help me select useful and appropriate resources for your family.

SOME DISCLAIMERS!
This program for parents does not assume that parents need to be "educated" because they have no expertise in parenting.  It does not suggest that parents need to be filled up because of some sort of deficit. Most parents have a sense of what is needed but occasionally get stumped on how to do it.

Providing parent education honors the fact that parenting a child is a full-time job! It takes a lot of energy.  It takes a lot of wisdom. It takes practice, many times trial and error, with some successes.

Parent ed also suggests that some small thoughtful idea can revolutionize a family. When parents get weary and discouraged, a renewed look at a situation can be energizing.   Sometimes parents need support from other parents who share a similar concern.

Many times an objective view from an experienced early childhood professional who has observed lots of young children will give great insight.   Sometimes parents just need a little "boost" for the parenting journey.

I do not have all the answers regarding parenting techniques.  True, I am a parent. True, I am a grandparent. True, I have worked in the early childhood field for over 25 years and the NSCC faculty for 12 years. I do have some knowledge and experience about  parenting.  But, the goal is not to "set parents straight!" The goal is to come alongside parents, to give assistance and encouragement during the parenting journey.

I am honored to have this opportunity at North Queen Anne Childcare and I invite you to take advantage of these opportunities.
Reading Recommendations
By Sandy Simmons and our Scholastic MOM - Dana Munn

In a word the best source of value-priced children's books is Scholastic!  And one of the benefits we offer NQACC families is the opportunity to buy these books each month by ordering them online and picking them up later in your child's classroom.  If that isn't convincing enough: each time you order you are awarding stars to your child's teacher so that she /he may exchange them for free books for the classroom to enjoy. It's a win, win, win situation.  You get the value and convenience, your child can enjoy wonderful books, and the class gets free books!  Here is how you can make it happen:

Sign up at Scholastic.  On the parent page, click the "Don't have a user Name and Password?" link, then register for your own username and password.  When prompted, enter the one-time class activation code GN2PK. This code ensures your order is sent to our Scholastic MOM - Dana Munn.

Select the books you'd like to order from over 500 titles available online...and take advantage of online-only specials and discounts.

Send your order by the due date of September 15.  Books will be delivered directly to the childcare, as always.

Of course you can still order using the form from the printed flyer(s).  Completed order forms and checks payable to Scholastic can be dropped off to Sandy in the office.

Ordering online is fast, easy, and secure.  Plus the whole center benefits thanks to the FREE books we'll earn with every parent online order.

Log on to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs now to get started.

Thank you,
Dana Munn

Keep on Track With Immunizations
September is the month we complete a statistical report to Washington State Department of Health on immunization status.  In it we are asked how many children we have enrolled and how many of these are current or exempt for each of 9 different childhood immunizations required by the state for pre-school enrollment.  Names of children are not included in this report.  Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Please make sure you have informed Sandy of any immunizations your child has received in the last year. A quick way to check your child's immunization status is to click on the picture of a green needle when you check your child in or out (unless people are backed up at the time clock).  If your child is new, your immunizations may not have been logged in on the computer yet.  Written notices will go out in September.
A family is a unit composed not only of children but of men, women, an occassional animal, and the common cold.  Ogden Nash

As we head into fall, we are also looking at flu and cold season.  Please remember that our policies for keeping sick children home are for the benefit of every child, teacher, and parent - for our whole NQACC family.  Our Keep Me Home policy can be found in the back of your parent handbook.

Sponge Prints

You can pick up inexpensive sponges from the Dollar Store and cut them into any shape you and your child would like.  With a little paint, children can make fun sponge print designs all over a variety of colors of paper.  Once the prints are dry, you can use the art work for cards and wrapping paper for Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and other special family members.

With sponge painting - children are able to:
explore the technique of printing iwth a pliable tool
experiment with paint by pressing rather than stroking
create relationships between the shape of the sponge and the shape of the print it makes
create different intensities of color with teh sponge, depending on how much paint is on the sponge andhow recently it was applied,
explroe the placement and arrangement of forms
observe and create patterns in symmetrical designs

This fun learning activity can be enjoyed by children of all ages - even you Moms, Dads, Grandparents, Aunts, and Uncles out there can have a great time sponge painting.
