This day & age we're living in Yes, we get a trifle weary
Gives cause for apprehension With Mr. Einstein's theory
With speed and new inventions So we must get down to earth at times
And things like third dimension Relax, relieve the tension
And no matter what the progress You must remember this
Or what yet may be proved A kiss is still a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh
The simple facts of life are such The fundamental things apply
They cannot be removed As time goes by
Let me see: When we are bothered by the speed of new ideas and inventions, we can calm ourselves by remembering that the fundamental things don't change. Perhaps, but I certainly wouldn't claim that the nature of a kiss or sigh are fundamental things. I also hope that a kiss will never "still" be a kiss, nor a sigh, just a sigh.
The only fundamental rule that seems to apply to life is change. One Rosh Hashana is never exactly like another. We are different. Hopefully, we have grown and changed. Rosh Hashana challenges us to measure those changes in order to change yet more.
Rosh Hashana offers us speedy new self-invention. Rather than bringing us down to earth, it lifts us beyond the third dimension, to a place where Mr. Einstein's theory does not apply. "God created Teshuva before the world" we are told by the Sages. All of its promise and potential were in place before any theory. It is not limited by relativity or time.
Rosh Hashana offers the opportunity to touch that moment before creation when God created Teshuva, a moment that continues to exist for those who want to transcend their apprehensions and limitations.
