A Success Story

"This program has opened the door for many opportunities that I would have never had the chance to experience otherwise. I received a full Jacksonville Jaguars Community Scholars Scholarship to the University of North Florida.  Now, I am a junior in the nursing program and received another scholarship that will allow me to go to Ghana, South Africa in the summer of 2009."

A letter from the Executive Director
Greetings!

It's hard to believe that 2008 is coming to an end. Empowerment Resources has had one of its best years ever as we continue to empower more youth and their families. Through our outreach efforts, we have worked with male and female youth participating in the Teen Court Program, TEAM UP after school programs and churches. Our signature program, Journey Into Womanhood, has graduated nine young ladies, since its inception. All are college students. As you can see, we have much to be thankful for.

Many individuals and organizations played a role in our success. Thank you to our friends, the Jacksonville Jaguar Foundation for awarding us a $10,000 grant to further develop Journey Into Womanhood. I also want to thank the United Way for giving us a mini-grant with Paxon Full Service Schools and the Champion Zones Project.

Empowerment Resources looks forward to 2009, and we are preparing for what's to come in 2009. Mark June 6, 2009, on your calendar for our Fifth Annual Journey Into Womanhood Celebration and Scholarship Banquet. Join us as we celebrate our five year journey. Happy Holidays to you and your family!

Sincerely,

In the holiday spirit JIW style Taking a moment to mingle
The young ladies of Journey Into Womanhood began the holiday season in style--serving more than 1,000 senior citizens at the Mayor's Holiday Festival. They along with other groups helped decorate, set up, clean up and serve holiday meals. This is the fifth year JIW has volunteered at this event.

In addition to graciously volunteering at the festival, Journey Into Womanhood decided to adopt six families from Community Connections. Members agreed to donate a few dollars from their allowance and paychecks to buy gifts for families in need.
Motivation + Goals = Honor Rows Taking a moment to mingle
Last August, JIW participants seized the opportunity to take part in the Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation Honor Rows Program. This unique, nationally recognized program uses seats at Jaguar home games as an incentive to encourage youth to set and achieve ambitious but realistic goals. The Honor Rows program was introduced to participants and their families with a kick-off meeting and family fun day. Empowerment Resources took it a step further by awarding saving bonds to four young ladies who made oral presentations on various topics to JIW members. Congratulations Ashley Irven, Jessica Polote, Azhanay Walker and Arden Ward.
