Girls in Summer

Summer is finally here! While we may have some fog we're also in for a lot of great days.  We've got lots of ideas about what to do and lots of ideas about where to escape if the fog invades too many days.  We've also got the most comprehensive list of camps, weekend events, and more.

Check our Events Page and our Calendar for more great ideas.

Look out for more 4th of July ideas next week.

We love to hear from other parents with ideas about
kid-friendly restaurants, activities, and more. We're also always looking for people to write feature articles.  If you have something you'd like to submit, we'd love to hear from you.

Bay Area County Fairs 2011

CarnivalIt's fair season and the Bay Area offers country fairs throughout the Summer.  Although the fairs have a lot of typical fair offerings like food, concerts, rides, shows, and fireworks, each fair offers something different. Some offer one price which includes admission and all entertainment. Other fairs offer free entrance but charge for entertainment and rides. Check each fair website for more unique and specific information.  See the full list here

Top Ten Ideas for 4th of July Family Fun 2011

fireworks
1.     Ride a train.  Roaring Camp railroad in Felton hosts an old-fashioned sock-hop, full of tasty treats and a patriotic ride along the rails.

2.    Build something. Visit the Berkeley Marina 4th of July celebration and let the kids burn off their holiday sugar with a hammer and nails at the Adventure Playground .

Green 15: Wildflowers Gone Wild

by Chris Giorni, founder of Tree Frog Treks

Girl with WildflowersWith all this late spring and early summer rain the wild flowers just keep coming.  Try a trip down to Land's End (just above the Cliff House and Sutro Baths above Ocean Beach) to see an amazing site of colors and critters.  The new restoration project is in full bloom - red Indian Paint brushes, blue and yellow lupines, orange sticky monkey flowers and red bee plants, which are pulling in their fair share of honey and bumble bees. Red-tailed hawks soar above as Ravens cajole in the seaside wind currents.  All over the city the flowers are flowing - Golden Gate Park, McLaren Park, Glen Canyon, Corona Heights - so get out and get dirty...and smell the flowers while you are at it.  Enjoy the outside together.

Lessoning the Fury: Learning from Anger

by Noelle Cochran, PsyD and Lele Diamond, MFT of Symbio.

Q: I'm the parent of three kids under the age of six. I've always considered myself a patient person - or at least until I had kids. Lately though, things have taken a turn for the worse. I've been losing my temper on a daily basis (and, more often than not, multiple times per day). I try to tell myself this is normal, that I've got a 2, 4 and 6 year-old, who's patience wouldn't be tested!? But the other day, (read more...)
