Happy Valentines Day from SFkids.org!

It's also the month everyone realizes they need to start thinking about what to do with their kids this summer. Don't worry, it's not too late.  Luckily, SFkids.org has the most comprehensive list of camps around.

We love to hear from other parents with ideas  about
kid-friendly  restaurants, activities, and more. We're also always looking for people to write feature articles.  If you have something you'd like to submit, we'd love to hear from you.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Making a Gift of Love

Crafts Girl

by Chris Loughran

Making a handmade gift or giving the gift of love can mean so much to the one making it and the one receiving it. We have compiled a list of ideas for special giving for holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions. Some workshops and classes are FREE. (read more...)

Celebrate Black History Month

Black History MonthFebruary is Black History Month.  There are many events around the City, particularly in our local libraries. See our calendar or the SF Public Library website.

Race Matters: Talking to Your Kids

MomWithSon

by Noelle Cochran, PsyD and Lele Diamond, MFT.

Q: I have a very outgoing, vivacious 4-year-old daughter. She is the kind of child who is interested in everything and won't let go of a subject until she's understood it. I love this quality in her, but I've recently come up against an unexpected struggle and I hope you can help me think this one through. (read more...)

SFkids.org Needs a Little Love
Hearts
Send us a little note telling us how you think SFkids.org makes San Francisco more family-friendly, what else you'd like to see, or any other feedback.

We are also looking for people who might be willing to take part in some focus groups over the next couple of months or who would be interested in being potential advisory board members. If you might be interested in helping us shape the future of SFkids.org we would love to hear from you. Email us at webmaster@sfkids.org.

Gung Hay Fat Choy

Celebrate the coming of the Year of the Rabbit and wish your neighbors "Gung Hay Fat Choy" (Happy New Year) by taking part in some of the great events in San Francisco.

Chinatown LanternsCelebrations culminate with the Chinese New Year Parade, February 19th, 5:30pm-8 pm. The parade runs from downtown through Chinatown. This is one of the best parades San Francisco has to offer for families, and it is the only one that takes place at night. For more information  see chineseparade.com.

Another great event is the Lunar New Year Celebration at the SF Zoo (2/13).  There are many other events at San Francisco libraries and museums. Check our Calendar for more ideas.

Free Summer Resource Fair 2011 Coming Soon!

Summer Resource FairThe staff at DCYF and SFUSD are hard at work hammering out the final details of the 6th Annual Summer Resource Fair. Keep checking back with SFkids.org to find out the final date and details.

In the mean time, search around our Camps Page. We are updating the camps as soon as information is available.

If you are a camp, keep checking SFkids.org for details and information about how to register for a table. Both non-profit and for-profit camps, classes, arts, sports, and family services-in San Francisco and beyond-are all welcome!  There will be no charge for Exhibitors and no charge for people to attend this event.

Camps, Camps, and More Camps
kids_at_camp
SFkids.org has the most comprehensive list of camps around.  We've been hard at work updating all of the summer camp information as well as information about spring break camps.

See our Camps Page to browse around and find a great camp for your kids.

Also see our list of Spring Break Camps and a special list of Spring Break Camps for 3- and 4-year-olds.

Are you a single parent and struggling with the stress of planning for summer already? Ruth Oprean Cardillo has written a great article Single Parents and Summer Schedules: Getting Real and Getting Organized to help you get through it (and her advice is good for all parents, not just single parents).

by Chris Loughran

When our son turned 15½, we asked him if he wanted to start studying for his driver's education test, the rites of passage for so many before him. I picked up the Drivers Handbook and a Parent-Teen Guide at the DMV office. Our son responded (read more...)

How to Homestead -- 11 in 11

We recently discovered this great project, How To Homestead, which features instructional videos made by San Francisco on such topics as making home-made pie, form an egg co-op, and much, more.
How to Homestead 2011
All year they are sponsoring neighborhood events in their 11 in 11 tour- How-to Homestead tours in all 11 San Francisco districts in 2011. From Hunters Point to the Richmond they will crisscross the City, delivering homestead skill shares during the day and new homestead films at night, as well as host potlucks and folk dancing. The events are free if you bring a potluck dish or $5 donation if you don't.

The official 11 in 11 tour begins on February 26 in District 2 at Booker T. Washington Community Center, located at 800 Presidio Ave. on the corner of Sutter Street.
See the full schedule on their website howtohomestead.org, plus information about upcoming dates in other districts.
