busy personGETTING STILL

We live in a culture that seems prejudiced against stillness. We're so busy we schedule our phone calls with each other.  We rush through our day with our minds racing and reminding us of all the things we need to get done. We're proud of how busy we are, announcing all of the activities we are involved in as if vying for the Busiest Person Award. Fast Food and Running on Dunkins are great descriptions of life in America. We don't yet equate stillness with progress and growth. What's to be gained by sitting still? And when we finally find time to relax, it's usually by "doing" something else. Reading, watching TV, listening to music, surfing on our computers. While we might truly enjoy these activities, in all reality they just serve to distract us and distance us further. From ourselves. From the wisdom that lies within.

If our answers lie within, perhaps getting still is the first step of the path that takes us there.  When we come to the realization that we can always access that part of us that serves as our inner compass, or guide, then we can stop searching. But we can't access this wisdom with all of that busyness going on, and all of that chatter in our heads.  Gandhi once said of the Western culture, "Here are people with everything, except stillness." Stillness is not death. Stillness creates space, a sacred space,  where we connect with the very force that sustains our lives. It's how we can grow our awareness. It's the doorway to happiness and inner peace.  So how does one busy person get still?

Step one is to s-l-o-w  d-o-w-n and breathe. The constant rushing around does nothing to extend our life years. Tell yourself it is OK to stop and take a break. Everything you need to do will be there waiting for you when you are done. We never really get it all done anyway, so why not add taking care of you as part of the process.

Step two is to sit and do nothing. I mean nothing. No TV, no newspaper, no music, no munching on potato chips either. Just sit. Close your eyes. Stop making the grocery list in your head. Or planning your next vacation. Just sit. Listen to your breathing. Focus on the nothingness of your actions. Do not judge. Sit still. Trust me this is not an easy task! You will, like me, start to feel antsy. You will want to start "doing something". Sitting and doing nothing won't feel normal. Hang in there.  Stretch that comfort zone. Just sit and be. Once you can do this for several minutes, the next day add a few minutes more, until you can feel comfortable sitting still with just you and your-SELF. Eventually the urge to get up and run away will subside as the peace of sitting in stillness takes its place.

Once in this quiet state you will be able to hear, trust and embrace all of the wisdom that resides and has always resided within. And then you will begin to have the confidence to navigate your life in the direction you want to go.

sun THE SUN: ESSENTIAL NUTRIENT
The overuse of sunscreen has led to Vitamin D deficiencies. Prior to its invention in the 1930s the human race seemed to do just fine in the sun without sunscreen and also without the skin cancer rates that exist today.  What if sunlight is really good for us! What if the sun, like eggs and real butter, is getting a bad rap, when in fact it might be what we need for good health?

The same UVB rays that cause sunburn (and are blocked by sunscreen) trigger the body's production of Vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiencies trigger a plethora of illnesses, including skin and other cancers.  Should we be blaming the sun for what could be the effects of a poor diet and the misuse/overuse of the sun?

Our food today lacks the nutrients that the body needs. Antioxidants like Vitamins C and E are essential as we have to cope with ever increasing environmental pollution. Antioxidants will protect the skin from sun damage.  Robert G. Wright, author of "Never Get Cancer Again" suggests increasing the amount of antioxidants in our diet (fruits and vegetables) but also suggests supplementing with vitamins A, C, E and D3, the carotenoids, quercitin, selenium and zinc. He says that Omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil, often deficient in the modern diet are also important in protecting the skin. He suggests taking extra folic acid if you spend a lot of time in the sun.

We tend to underdo or overdo our sun time. We're shut-ins during the work week, and then we overdose on weekends and get burned. A sunburn is NOT GOOD! A better approach is limiting exposure to short time periods and increasing until you reach a protective tan. Seek to protect yourself anytime that your skin turns pink. Wear a hat and keep your face covered.

Dr. Joe Mercola just released "Dark Deception" which sheds new light on the healing properties of the sun. He agrees that the medical industry has not given us the truth that we need to know about sunlight. Click here to read a sample from his book.

Everyone is different when it comes to the sun. Complexions vary, nutritional intakes differ from person to person. Not everyone can work up to that protective tan. If there is a need for a sunscreen, there are some that do not contain the many carcinogenic chemicals that most of the ready-to-go sunscreens contain. Click here to link to a recommended chemical free sunscreen. Just remember that sun IS an essential nutrient that will actually enhance your wellness. Just be sun-wise.

tina 1"It is my passion and desire to contribute to the betterment of the world by spreading the message that a state of well being is for everyone. No matter how old you are, or what stage you are in, or what you have been through, I believe that you can find your way back to the Wholeness that was always your birthright.  We are born magnificent beings but get conditioned into mediocrity. It is up to you to pick up the map to find your way back. And I'll help you anyway I can. "If you want to know the quality of what you radiate, just observe how people respond to you. They are your mirror." Gary Craig.

Have a great month!
