The Mind Body Connection: Your Immune System There are posters hanging all over the walls of the hospital where I work with dutiful reminders for all of us to wash our hands. At the bottom of each poster the slogan reads, "Hand-washing is the best way to prevent infection." While I agree that hand-washing is extremely important, I would have preferred a line that reads, "A strong immune system is the best way to prevent infection." The allopathic world still has not fully embraced the importance of promoting nutrition and lifestyle as a way to strengthen the immune system, our body's first line of defense. Two people can be exposed to the same virus or bacteria. They both wash their hands. One gets sick and one does not. What makes the difference? A stronger immune system.
Your immune system is your gift from your Creator and is there to sustain your life in every way. Some people think that the mind and the immune system are two unrelated entities. However you were born with an integral connection between your mind, which is the command center and your immune system, which is directly influenced by your mind. When there is an injury or insult to the system the mind subconsciously directs the immune system to heal the area or respond to the invader in the case of a virus. The immune system then takes action in the form of chemical reactions doing what it needs to do. Having a strong immune system is like having the best and most capable army that stands ready to assist you and keep you well. Conversely, a weakened immune system virtually ensures that you will not be able to return to balance easily and readily and enjoy health and vitality the way you were meant to. Your health and wellness is not related to your genetics as much as you might have been led to believe. It is much more important to take steps to keep your immune system working at its optimal best.
Steps to strengthening the immune system: It is essential to clean up the way you eat. Start by eliminating the usual suspects like concentrated sugar, high fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners. Avoid trans-fats, MSG, food dyes and any ingredient that you cannot pronounce. If the immune system has to spend its time and energy dealing with all of these unnatural invaders coming in with the food, it will weaken considerably. Add more plant based food and whole grains, nuts and seeds. If you eat meat, look to decrease your overall amount and look to organic varieties. You don't need dairy. Eliminate all soda completely including diet as well. Increase your hydration and drink plenty of good clean alkaline water.
Get enough sleep at night. Being exhausted and tired definitely weakens the immune system. Make it a priority to get enough sleep so you do not have to drag yourself out of the bed in the morning.
If you smoke or drink too much caffeine or alcohol think about eliminating these as well, as they are immune system drainers. Get out in the sunshine and get fresh air every day. It is essential to have a form of exercise that you enjoy. Forcing yourself to do exercise that you hate will actually work against you.
Chronic stress is the biggest offender and weakens the immune system more than any other contributor. Walking around with the stress response in the "on" position will take years off of your life after it causes undue harm in the form of illness. Moving negativity out and introducing a softer and gentler approach to life will create a big boost to the immune system. When babies are born they arrive with underdeveloped immune systems. Every time that a mother or caregiver holds that baby and coos or smiles at it and emits a feeling of love, the baby's immune system gets a boost. Love energizes the immune system. That is why if a baby does not get the love and attention it needs and deserves, it can literally "fail to thrive". If we fail to give ourselves the love and attention we need, our immune system will also fail to thrive.

Eating Better For Less  | Seafood: Healthy or Hazardous? A broiled salmon steak, organic brown rice, a leafy green salad. Sounds like a healthy meal, right? Maybe not. According to a research study done by the Chicago Tribune and Rutgers University, commercial seafood contains much higher levels of mercury than people suspect. Mercury. You know, that toxic metal in glass thermometers. The toxic metal in amalgams. The odorless invisible toxic metal that can damage the nervous system of fetuses and children and cause adults to experience fatigue, lack of concentration and numbness in extremities. That mercury. How did it wind up in fish?
In a perfect world, eating seafood would ensure getting a food high in protein and full of essential nutrients and fatty acids. But sadly like most other commercialized food, it too has become adulterated and potentially dangerous. Certain industrial processes such as coal burning power plants release mercury into the environment as a byproduct. Once released into the atmosphere it can travel thousands of miles before ending up in oceans and other bodies of water. Once in the water it combines with certain bacteria which then chemically alters the mercury into a substance known as methyl-mercury which is a highly toxic substance that is eaten or absorbed by fish. It deposits in the flesh of the fish. When we eat fish contaminated mercury, we in turn absorb it.
If you are thinking that the government is taking measures to ensure your protection, consider this. The Tribune discovered that "regulators have repeatedly downplayed the hazards of mercury and failed to take basic steps to protect public health....." They went on to report that "the government does not confiscate seafood that exceeds the US limits for mercury, and there is no regular or rigorous inspection of seafood for mercury contamination at all".
Another study in the April 2010 edition of Environmental Research found that "tuna accounts for over one third of total mercury exposure from seafood consumption in the US. Canned tuna is the number one fish product consumed in the US today and contributes 37% of the total mercury in the seafood supply" That is almost six times as much as the combined total of the highest mercury laden fish which are swordfish, shark, mackerel and tile fish. Who would have thought that tuna can be hazardous to your health? Reportedly, canned tuna is the worst!
So once again, we as consumers have to take matters into our own hands, if we want to protect our health. Since not all fish are contaminated equally, it would be best to learn which ones carry the most danger. There are already warnings that pregnant women avoid seafood altogether, and lately there are warnings that even healthy adults limit seafood to only once or twice a week. After reducing the amount of seafood you take in, after about six months, the mercury that has been accumulated will start to be released. The use of chlorella, a natural detoxifying agent can help the process. Women in Transition This weekly support group is designed to assist women through a period of transformation and empower them to move life forward, becoming self directed, self motivated and self confident in the process. This group may be helpful if you are going through divorce or separation, career change, empty nest, mid-life blues, lack of energy, feeling stuck, or unable to manage stress. This is a future oriented,solutions based approach that includes nutritional and life-style coaching along with stress management techniques.
