Lightening Up "Angels fly because they take themselves lightly" GK Chesterton The growing amount of obesity along with its devastating health effects points to a need for us as a nation to lighten up. As a result of our food, heavily laden with sugar and chemical additives that addict our taste buds, coupled with the heavy emotions housed in our body that seem to drag us down, the overall health of our nation continues to be in a downward spiral. We might be living longer, but the rising rates of cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and pulmonary disease account for why the US rates 39th in the world when it comes to our health, even as we spend more than any other nation on health care.
When we finally decide to make the commitment to lose the weight, the basics seem so simple: Eliminate sugar, artificial sweeteners and other added chemicals, stay away from processed and fast food, add more fruits and vegetables, drink lots of good clean alkaline water, and mix in some exercise. We give it a shot, we might lose some weight but many of us cannot sustain it. Why? Because of the sabotage that occurs at the subconscious level.
It's those heavy emotions that are buried within that are the culprit. Guilt is a heavy emotion to have to cart around. So is depression, so is resentment and so is unresolved trauma or grief. To walk through life with the weight of these energies is like carrying a heavy backpack of rocks with you at all times. How can we feel lightness of spirit when burdened with these constant nagging companions. Food becomes the perfect comforter to soothe the emotional pain or "stuff" the feelings back down. No wonder it's so tough to lighten up and stay there. This is why the use of EFT can be so freeing. EFT which stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques can be applied in order to bubble those old stuck energies UP and OUT! Like emptying the backpack one rock at a time.
Another way we can lighten up emotionally is to remember not to take ourselves (and everyone else) so seriously. There was a great little book written several years ago called "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff". It served as a good reminder for us to be careful about where we want to spend our precious energy. The disaster in Haiti reminds us that life can change drastically at any given moment. Don't we therefore want to spend our precious time doing the things that really matter, having fun enjoying ourselves and those we love? When we lighten up emotionally we shed the pounds naturally.
One more easy way to lighten up is to give ourselves permission to laugh more. We laughed spontaneously as kids, but our laughter dwindled as we got older. I remember how much fun it was as a kid to laugh to the point of tears. There is much truth in the statement "laughter is good medicine". You can feel a positive shift in your energy when you laugh. Norman Cousins actually healed his cancer by watching funny movies and laughing. There is every good reason to laugh more, complain less and learn to love it all.

Are Cell Phones the New Cigarettes? When I first worked a a nurse in the 70's patients could smoke in the hospital at their bedside. Doctors and nurses smoked at the desk. We smoked in movie theaters and airplanes. The Marlboro Man and Joe Camel and the Virginia Slim model all lured us into thinking that smoking was a very cool thing to do. When I smoked my first cigarette my body gave me a very clear indication that this was not a good thing to do, but back then I chose to ignore the warning. Fortunately I smartened up and quit many years ago. Cigarette companies assured us smoking was safe and we later came to find out that they deceived us. As a nation we evolved into a fairly smoke-free society, yet how many people still die needlessly because of cigarettes.
I am beginning to believe that cell phones are the new cigarette and will eventually be uncovered to be as dangerous if not more so than cigarettes were. Just as I knew instinctively that inhaling smoke and chemicals can't possible be good for you; I also know instinctively that holding a device that emits radiation so closely to our brain cannot be good either. But the vendors continue to assure us that they are safe. And look how cell phones are marketed. The whole family is encouraged to have a cell phone, even children whose brains are still developing. All styles, colors sizes and varieties. We're so busy updating our phones every two years in order to keep up with the latest technology that we neglect paying attention to the fact that we are setting ourselves up for disaster down the line. And if you don't think we are addicted to our cell phones, try leaving yours home for a day or so and see how you feel.
The first long-range studies about the health effects from cell phone use have raised some serious questions about the safety of cell phones and the radiation that they emit so close to our ears.Those who use cell phones for 10 years were twice as likely to develop malignant brain tumors called gliomas, according to a study published last year in Occupational Environmental Medicine. The conclusion may not be definitive, but it's worrying to the millions of us who have become accustomed to staying in touch while on the go. A few little known facts: Japan has banned cell phone use on trains to cut down on second hand radiation. France has banned advertising cell phones to children. A cell call lasting for just 2 minutes can alter the natural electrical activity of a child's brain for up to one hour. When you use a cell phone 70% of the energy emitted is absorbed in your head. The first cell phones were introduced in 1984. Their use has skyrocketed since then to about 4 billion phones. It's bad enough we have so much exposure to EMR (electromagnetic radiation) from satellites, computers, TV's and transmission lines. It is virtually impossible to escape radiation. What we can do however is look for ways to protect ourselves by reducing our use of cell phones, or keeping it away from our brains. Use the speaker phone feature. Use text messaging over live calls when you can. There are safe headsets that you can purchase that reduce your exposure. The Blue Tube headset recommended by Dr. Mercola is a safe one. Turn your phone off whenever possible. Lastly, if you place one of Cieaura's holographic Energy chips on your cell phone, it will drastically reduce radiation.

Supplementing the Safe Way
Even traditionally trained medical doctors now acknowledge that everyone needs to take a vitamin supplement. Eating a perfect diet that consists of organic wholesome food is not the way the average American eats. And even if your diet consists primarily of fruits and vegetables, our soil has become so depleted of minerals and nutrients, much of their nutritional value is lost. We need to supplement our diet but walking into a health food store can be both overwhelming and expensive.
Often we add a new supplement because of something we read in a magazine or heard on the news, so we rush out to purchase a bottle of this vitamin or that herb. Since (as of right now) the FDA does not regulate vitamins or herbs, DSHA allows us the freedom to purchase and use supplements as much as we want. I am not promoting that the FDA step in and regulate the use of supplements; but I believe that we can learn more about proper supplementation before we spend the money or potentially cause health problems.
Supplementation does not have to be complicated. If you are not yet taking a vitamin/mineral supplement you can start by looking for one that is derived from FOOD not CHEMICALS. Synthetic vitamins (made in a lab) won't be absorbed properly as your cells are smart enough to know the difference between what to allow in (food) and what to keep out (chemicals) You are wasting your money if you purchase cheap synthetic vitamins from your local Walgreen's or Costco. As a matter of fact, the liver can get toxic from the buildup of residual vitamin waste. Always take a liquid over a pill to ensure absorption. I love Sea Aloe as it contains vitamins,minerals, amino acids and trace minerals and is derived from sea vegetables, Aloe Vera and pau d'arco which has healing properties . Always take a quality fish oil. Avoid buying cheap fish oil unless you want mercury contamination. Vitamin D3 is a must, but getting your Vitamin D level checked is essential. The benefits of Vitamin C are well known.
When it comes to taking herbal supplements, you need to know if the herb might interact adversely with any medications that you are taking. A friend of mine was taking Ultram ( a commonly prescribed pain medication) and she added melatonin along with 5HTP (both readily available in health food stores) to help with sleep. Taken singularly, each of these would have been safe to take, but when taken in combination they caused a serious condition called Serotonin Syndrome, a potentially llife-threatening drug reaction. Herbs can be powerful so please do due diligence before adding herbs to your regimen. Women in Transition This weekly support group is designed to assist women through a period of transformation and empower them to move life forward, becoming self directed, self motivated and self confident in the process.
