Firming Up Your "I CANS"
The I CANS. You know them very well. They reside within you. They often come around with new ideas for you to consider. The I CANS show up when you are bursting with the excitement of a new approach to life. You've decided it's time for a change. A new body, a new relationship, a career change, taking a risk. The I CANS have the excitement and enthusiasm of a child. I CANS are high energy, and we L-O-V-E having them around. And just as the I CANS are ready to begin..... the dark sedan quietly rolls up beside you. And there they are with their menacing faces. Calling your name, slowly getting out of the car, flexing their muscles. They want you to know THEY have arrived. The I CAN'TS. Bullies that they are, they want to remind you that THEY are in charge. And when the I CAN'TS start up with their bullying, the I CANS quickly shrink back into retreat.

We grew up reading The Little Train That Could. We are familiar with Henry Ford's famous quote, "If you think you can or you think you can't, you are right!" We all know that without the I CAN'TS that show up so frequently ready to knock us off our path to getting what we want, our lives would be very different. We'd all be winners and we would all have huge success.

The conscious mind is the area where things begin. We have an idea, and we start to imagine would it would be like. We want success, of course we do. The idea gets us excited, and we say, "I want to GO for this. This is really what I want, and I think I CAN do this. So why do our efforts to get what we want often get beaten down by our own self-sabotage? Because of those bully I CAN'TS that rise up from the subconscious where they wait to RE-MIND us that we can't be a success. The banter of an I CAN'T sounds something like this: "You can't change, this is not for you. Don't think you have what it takes, who do you think you are? May I remind you that success is for everyone else, NOT YOU!! It is not safe for you, so don't even try." So our little I CANS get beaten down. They aren't strong enough to stand up to the bully. The I CAN'TS are so powerful that we give in to them, and then it's back to the old familiar status quo.

What you exercise gets stronger. Pump your muscles at the gym every day and you will have strong muscles. Avoid exercise and muscles get weak. This is why the I CANT'S have so much power. They have had lots of practice.  How do we strengthen our I CANS? With lots of practice and determination. The more we can stay with our I CANS no matter what the bully says the more ability we have to achieve our desires. Stay with it. Say things like, "Of course I can, I don't need to listen to that voice of sabotage". Practice and stick with it, and before you know it, your little I CANS will strengthen into magnificent voices of freedom to achieve anything you put your heart and mind into.

 deep breathingInspiration: Breathing in Spirit
From the dawn of our birth until the sunset of death, we breathe, always and everywhere. Our breath is what connects us to the Universal Life Force every minute of our entire life. As we do not have to exert any conscious effort to take our next breath, we take our breathing for granted. We breathe through the night when we sleep, and we may only really notice our breath when we are sick and coughing or congested. Otherwise, we rarely stop to consciously tune into our breathing. The catch phrase to "stop and take a breather" might be a good reminder how this one simple tool can serve to decrease stress in the moment.

The word inspiration can be defined as the drawing in of air into our lungs. It can also mean "a divine influence or action on a person held to qualify him to receive and communicate sacred revelation". The word inspire reminds us also of "in-spirit" and when we consciously stop and draw in a breath, we are literally connecting with the Divine. Breathing is a life force and this makes it powerful enough to affect our relationships, facilitate our health, and calm our emotions. But the power of the breath can fall by the wayside if we aren't consciously aware of its capacity through conscious breathing. Throughout the course of our day, the more often we can pause and take a slow and full conscious breath, the more we will move towards a state of relaxation. A conscious deep breath will decrease the pulse and the blood pressure, and allow us to be more mindful of the present moment.
 
Most of us are shallow breathers. To take a full cleansing breath, push your belly out on the inhale to give the lungs room to fully expand. On the exhale, do the opposite and pull your belly in. Most people deep breathe the opposite way. Try to stop and take a conscious breath before doing things like picking up the phone, or entering a room, or before a conversation with someone that you think might be challenging. Developing the habit of conscious breathing throughout the day will undoubtedly help you walk through life feeling better, lighter and more connected.
 healthy bodyThe Wisdom of Our Body
As modern medicine advanced we became less able to listen to and honor the wisdom of our own body. We know that our immune system is our first line of defense, and we also know that keeping the immune system strong gives us a better chance at staying healthy. However, there may be times when we catch something and get sick. Our bodies were brilliantly designed to heal. Our body has an amazing capacity to heal itself if given the right environment, like good rest, proper nutrition and supplements. But we are busy people and we have NO TIME to be sick. So in our quest to feel better faster, we've traded patience to heal naturally in exchange for fast acting symptom relief with medications. By doing this, we may actually be working against ourselves.....
 
Take fever for example. When we become ill, fever is a good thing. Fever is a natural response to pathogens that invade the system. As viruses and bacteria thrive nicely in a 98.6 F environment, the body turns up the heat as a way to burn off the pathogens. In a quest to feel better we pop Tylenol or Motrin hoping we can achieve that by bringing down our temperature. But what the body needs to do is heat up and sweat out the illness. By interfering with the body's natural healing ability we actually prolong our illness! So if you become sick and start heating up, let the body do it's thing and let that temperature rise! It's killing the invader and that is what you want to happen. Instead of taking anti-fever medication, try resting and drinking lots of fluids. You will actually heal faster in the long run.

In her book "Prescription for Natural Healing"  Phyllis Bach states "Colloidal Silver is an inexpensive healing agent and disinfectant that has a myriad of applications" Colloids are the tiniest biological form of any matter. Fibro Aid - an ongoing support group for people in chronic pain
This is an ongoing group that is co-led by myself and Dr. William Savanin, a psychiatrist at Metrowest Medical Center. This group is supportive and educational, solution based, and integrates complementary and alternative therapies along with traditional psychotherapy. Most insurances are accepted. Women in Transition 
This weekly support group is designed to assist women through a period of transformation and empower them to move life forward, becoming self directed, self motivated and self confident in the process. This group may be helpful if you are going through divorce or separation, career change, empty nest, mid-life blues, lack of energy, feeling stuck, or unable to manage stress. This is a future oriented,solutions based approach that includes nutritional and life-style coaching along with stress management techniques.
