The Key to Happiness "Everything is based on mind, led by mind, fashioned by mind. If you speak and act with a polluted mind, suffering will follow you, as the wheels of the oxcart follow the footsteps of the ox. If you speak and act with a pure mind, happiness will follow you, as a shadow clings to a form." ~Buddha
In our earliest days as children we were naturally happy. Our sole agenda was to be lost in the unique experience of each individual moment. Everything was awesome. We weren't worrying about our future or regretting our past. If something did not go our way, we easily expressed our feelings and quickly returned to the business of being happy. Eventually we became influenced by a variety of teachers: parents and other authority figures who downloaded their attitudes and beliefs into our programming, resulting in our developing beliefs about life and ourselves that led to the erosion of our innocent childlike approach. Many spend a lifetime seeking to get back to what once was so natural. How much money is spent on self-help books and tools that promise to return you to happiness? No doubt, everyone wants to be happy. So what's the key?
I truly believe that happiness is an acquired skill. Happiness is not so much an objective reality as it is a subjective decision. There will always be something to complain about even when times are good, and conversely, even in the worst of times there is something to celebrate. Habitual complaining can become a form of addiction. Habitual complainers have a habit of pointing out the worst in people or situations. Remember that both blessing and condemnation have power. Just thinking something is bad has the power to make it so in our experience.
Most of us walk through life in wonderful circumstances that we fail to appreciate. Reasons for happiness abound but remain unnoticed. It's akin to eating but not tasting the food. Or being on a train staring out the window and seeing nothing. We are missing our lives by missing the simple pleasures that are there. Happiness is not determined by circumstances. Nor is happiness what happens when everything lines up for you the way you think it should. That's just a temporary respite. Putting energy into creating the "right" circumstances to occur in order to be happy is like building your house on sand. One good wave and..... you know the rest. Happiness happens when you decide to be happy.
Gratitude is essential to happiness. Developing a grateful attitude - knowing that every time we get ourselves where we need to be safely, we have something to be happy about. Every time we can wake up and stand up and walk unaided, we have lots to celebrate. Every meal we eat, every handshake from a friend, the ability to go out into the sunshine, we have cause for celebration. That is the essence of a happy existence. Like a muscle that needs repetition to stay strong, every time we practice gratitude we expand our happiness quotient. So make a decision that you will start to look for the positives in your life, and take your focus off what you perceive as wrong or bad or not good. Like the baby in constant awe, you will begin to see some awesome things once again, feeling better....feeling happy.

It's not Soy good for you The story of soy and how went it from a relatively obscure seldom eaten food to a mainstream $6.6 billion a year and growing is an interesting one. In 1913 soy was listed in the USDA's handbook not as a food but as an industrial byproduct. Originally planted in the US extensively in order to extract the soybean oil which eventually replaced the far healthier tropical oils, the by-product of the process was a massive amount of soy protein. Since they could not feed this to animals due to it's causing health problems, they had to create another market to maximize their profits. Through brilliant marketing, intense lobbying with the FDA, and a smear campaign against tropical oils, the soy industry has been highly effective purporting soy to be an ideal protein and an excellent way to lower cholesterol, reduce menopause symptoms and protect against heart disease. Nothing could be further from the truth.
It seems ironic that soy is so accepted as a health food when Dr. Kaayla Daniel, the author of the most comprehensive book written on this soy deception "The Whole Soy Story: The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health Food" states, "thousands of studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive distress, immune-system breakdown, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders and infertility - even cancer and heart disease."
The Nutrition Committee of the American Heart Association after reviewing decades of studies on the health benefits of soy and found little to no evidence that soy-based foods lower cholesterol, prevent prostate breast or uterine cancers, or limit menopausal related symptoms.Soy actually contains some potentially harmful components including antinutrients which contain inhibitors that deter enzymes needed for protein digestion, hemaglutinins which cause red blood cells to clump, goitrogens which can lead to depressed thyroid functions, phytates which prevent the absorption of minerals, phytoestrogens which block the hormone estrogen, aluminum, and toxic levels of manganese. Most soybeans are genetically modified and contaminated with high amounts of pesticides.
Two-thirds of processed foods contain some type of soy, so you may be consuming it and not even know it. Learn how to read food labels, and look for soy protein isolate, soybean oil, soy protein concentrate, texturized vegetable protein, hydrolyzed vegetable protein in the ingredients. Soy milk which is nothing more than the waste product of the tofu-making process is increasing in popularity as more consumers drink this in place of milk. Did you know that drinking even two glasses of soy milk daily for one month has enough phytoestrogens to alter a woman's menstrual cycle? Tofu is not natural but a highly processed form of soybean curd and it has all of the health risks associated with other highly processed soy food, including potential risks to the brain.
If soy is fermented and non-GMO, soy can be a healthy addition to your diet. Fermented soy products include tempeh, miso, natto and soy sauce or tamari. Other than these, you would be doing yourself a huge health favor if you eliminate all soy from your diet completely.

Sea Salt Like fat and eggs, salt has had a lot of bad press over the years, and many people have been led to the notion that it is best to avoid it altogether. Although it is quite true that over-consumption of common table salt is a contributor to high blood pressure and cardiac problems, the problem is in the refinement process of the salt itself. Just like sugar and white flour, table salt has been highly processed and stripped of the vital minerals that were once there in salt's original form. And don't think that just by avoiding shaking table salt on your food you have eliminated this from your diet. Refined salt is usually in processed food in large amounts as it is a cheap way to make food taste better. In addition to having gone through a chlorination (bleaching) process, table salt contains hydroscopic (water-absorbing) additives to prevent the salt from clumping. Bright white free flowing salt is always sure to have additives.
There is one salt that is actually good for your health, and that is natural sea salt. Natural and unrefined sea salt comes directly from the sea to you. It may have a grey color which indicates the presence of many other minerals that are in it. We need the vital electrolytes in salt, sodium and potassium, to control water levels in the blood and tissues. A healthy intake of this highly nutritious sea salt will also aid in balancing blood sugar levels, help with absorption of food in our intestine, act as a strong and natural anti-histamine, and clear the lung of mucus and phlegm. Natural sea salt brings out the natural flavor of food and makes the food taste better than with ordinary table salt.
You can find sea salt fairly easily today, at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's, and even in some conventional supermarkets. Look for the coarser grain and remember the gray color indicates less processing and more natural minerals that will benefit your overall health. Celtic Sea Salt and Himalayan Sea Salt are two excellent sites to visit to learn more about the health enhancing properties of natural sea salt.

It is my passion and desire to contribute to the betterment of the world by spreading the message that a state of well being is for everyone. No matter how old you are, or what stage you are in, or what you have been through, I believe that you can find your way back to the Wholeness that was always your birthright. We are born magnificent beings but get conditioned into mediocrity. It is up to you to pick up the map to find your way back. And I'll help you anyway I can. "If you want to know the quality of what you radiate, just observe how people respond to you. They are your mirror." Gary Craig.
Have a great month! ~Tina
