Focus on the ISTE NETS Standards
Research & Information Fluency

by Tammy Stephens

Each month we will devote this column in our newsletter to how PODetc Courses help educators meet the standards The International Society of Technology Education has developed National Education Technology Standards.

This month we will be examining the standard Critical Thinking, Problem Solving & Decision-Making

One of the PODetc courses that meets this standard is our Focus on STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) Course taught by Dr. Lovejoy. In the description of the course it states, "Students need the opportunity to forge not just social networks, but problem solving networks to collaborate across borders in finding common solutions to global problems."

Participants in the course work together to define and collaborate to establish shared meanings of important STEM concepts. Throughout the course participants use collaborative tools such as bubble.us, Intel Visual Ranking Tool, Google Spreadsheets, and Intel Showing Evidence Tool to problem solve.

The course will be offered April 12th. The deadline to register for the course is  April 5th. More information about the course is available on at the PODetc website. Participants can take the course for 1 graduate credit through the University of Green Bay.
Please Welcome Dr. Smith
Ron Smith
Please welcome Dr. Smith our newest PODetc instructor. Dr. Smith will be co-teaching Survey of Emerging Technologies with Dr. Lovejoy which begins April 12th.

Ron Smith has been a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District for ten years, most recently at Helen Bernstein High School in Hollywood, CA, teaching art, drawing, digital graphics and video.

He came to teaching by way of photography, after being a commercial photographer and lab operator for 20 years. Indeed, he became a teacher by accident. Working in his photo lab before he had any interest in teaching, he was asked to fill in for a teacher at a local community college. Later, while working on his master's degree at California State University, Northridge, he taught himself Photoshop because he needed to create ultra-large panoramas for his one-man-show show. The art department chair learned of his experimentation, and asked him to teach a class in Photoshop that lasted more than two years.

He holds a Bachelor's in Art, and a Master's in Art Education, both from California State University, Northridge, and a Doctorate in Educational Technology from Pepperdine University in Los Angeles.

Focus on STEM
April 12-May 7
1 graduate credit available through the University of Green Bay

Focus on STEM introduces educators to a new perspective from which to develop their craft.  PODetc students will use online tools to integrate and apply the components of STEM to their curricula.  Course participants will develop a working definition of STEM as it applies to their own teaching.  Students need the opportunity to forge not just social networks, but problem solving networks to collaborate across borders in finding common solutions to global problems. Educators must work toward the goal of preparing tomorrow's global builders and makers.
